recession busting summer gigs...

I'm a student and like pretty much everyone I know in 3rd level education, secondary school or at work this summer is looking like a dull broke one. The sluggish sales of ****** tickets and the reduction of ticket prices by U2 reflect the economically gloomy times that we live in. A few of us have come up with an idea to address these drepessing times, well not really but perhaps relieve it for a day or two. We were discussing the showband days when there were dancehalls all over the country and we were thinking of reviving those days i.e organising concerts around the country in remote enough areas that would welcome the business. Small enough events lets, say between 500 and 1000 people. The emphasis of course would be on the ticket prices, try to keep them as cheap as possible. I genuinely believe artists and bands in Ireland would be interested, I do some part time promotional work for a record company and from what i can see they would welcome the gigs... anyway it's an idea in the very early stages we just want to put it out there, see what people think,
    cheers

I'd love to know is it possible for some total random person to book a venue and different bands where they can play music? Cos I'd love to get some of my mates bands together(different people who don't know each other), rent out a small enough space, and let them play and the drink flow. Assume the cost would be very high tho!

Mushy - I'd assume a lot of places in town would be happy to let you do this if you were gonna bring x amount of people into them to drink beer!

This sounds like a good idea to me! You could talk to some of the local music shops about selling the tickets, Road Records, City disc's etc. I'm sure there are plenty of bands who would jump at the chance of playing in front of a crowd of people in a good venue. And with the lack of gigs going on who knows you might get the venues at a cheaper rate. I reckon you should act on this one!:)

    cheers for the feedback!

well the thinking behind this whole mullarkey was, as well of promoting decent music, to promote local business. Have local shops, pubs whatever in surrounding towns, sell the tickets, don't involve any ticket selling agents just sell the tickets to the business and agree a booking fee that they can add on to the price so they're making a profit, that way you'd have free promotion, sort of. Sort out a alcohol licence and allow local bars to set up shop for a fee, as opposed to contracting bar staff. it's a big plan but i think it could definitely break even if you got the right places and bands.
i was thinking an outdoor gig by the way!!!

Knockin Stockin should be good. And i think Life will be on this year as well. Plenty of cheapos on in Europe as well. Melt for one, outside Berlin. You get the whole lot cheaper than a weekend at ****** for example. And it's better.
