Measuring for curtains - help please

Hi there, I signed up for two curtain making classes but both were cancelled due to insufficient numbers so I've decided to try to learn myself using internet / books.

The only problem is there are so many sites with instructions and they all say different things. My head is spinning from it all!

Can anyone tell me a simple way of measuring your window for curtains please? One site I looked at gave a formula where the width of the fabric was required but how do I know the width before I buy it?????

Any help in simplifying would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks.

If it is a simple straight-forward situation, allow 25cm each side of window and allow 15cm above making sure you have space above that 15cm to fit the pole in.

Anything more complicated you need to ask specifically.

If you have something specific in mind or a particular query ask and I will gladly answer.

If interested I have a lot of written info which you are welcome to.

    Good luck with it.

Let me know if I can help?

As phoenix3 said for pencil pleat, but watch out for other finishes.
For french pleat add to width for overlap, tab top measure drop from top of pole (pole diameter important too), eyelet finish generally measure drop from 3cm above top of pole. seamstresses often have their own understanding of the rules so check before ordering. Better still, if ordering expensive curtains get them to measure.

Curtain width should be at least double the width of the window. ANy less and they'll look really miserly when pulled.

Thats fabric width not curtain width, and does not apply to tab top.

That's just why I did not go into any further detail in my previous post. You just cannot pick it all up over night. This is where disasters occur. As I already said if there is a specific query just put it up.

Fabric widths come in only certain measurements. If you go to the shop you'll see the 2 or 3 widths they come in, and you can then measure to suit whichever width you buy. Smaller width-more material to buy.

What I mean is the fabric width of a made up curtain. What you mean is the fabric width of a roll of fabric, generally 54 inches in curtain material. 48 inch in dressmaking material I think.
