    Just had a look.

I'm not a target shooter and I don't have a rifle. I used to have one some years back but got rid of it.
Tell me this though, why do target shooters have all that gear - jackets, boots, pants????

I can understand clay shooters wearing skeet vests and hunters wearing appropriate outdoor clothing, but why target rifle shooters?

What does the jacket do for instance?

    What do the boots do?

    Pants?...........

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question:confused:

5.5kg of rifle held in an offset assymetric load for nearly two hours of competition and a good few more hours in training will mangle your back without the kit. It stabilises your posture (in the same way a weightlifters belt stabilises theirs).

We don't see acute injuries in our sport, but if you don't wear the kit, you can see chronic ones allright.

Also, the jacket has an attachment point for the sling for the rifle in prone.

As to the boots, it's funny you should mention that, here's something I prepared earlier.

I didn't realise target rifles were that heavy (turns around, picks up No. 1 son's 5kg dumbell and winces:eek:).

I can see why you need the jackets and the article on the boots explains it nicely. Presumably you tighten the jacket around yourself a bit like a straitjacket?

No, those are just the air rifles - the smallbore rifles can go up to 8kg.
The jacket can be tightened, but not as tight as people think - there are strict rules regarding the stiffness of the material, the amount of overlap when the jacket is closed, where the buttons can be, and so on. The general quick test is being able to sit down and stand up again while in full kit.
