Recommend a reasonable hardware based RAID card

    Hi Folks,

I've been looking into putting together a HTPC and one of the hickups I've come across is using RAID and Linux. I want to have a RAID array as Ive lost too many HDD's to head crashes and I wanted to put Linux on it so I would be forced to use it more. The stumbling block is that the majority of Motherboards that have RAID onboard actually have software RAID so theres alot of fiddling with settings in Linux instead of more or less plug and play under Windows. I was hoping someone here could recommend a cheap hardware based RAID card.

    Regards,

    Dave

To be honest Dave the soft RAID of any modern Linux Distro is more than sufficient, especially for a home server situation. Personally id save the money that Id spend on the hardRAID card and add a drive or two to a softRAID array. By this I dont mean trying to find Linux softRAID drivers for your controller, but rather by using MDADM and LVM to set it up.

Have you decided on a distro? Khannie is often on the *NIX board here and regularly posts about hits exploits with MDADM on Ubuntu.

To answer your question (LOL) unless you want to go legacy (say to IDE) there arent a lot of cheap, genuine hardware RAID cards out there. That said, you can have a killer RAID setup for small money with IDE. Most people mistakenly believe that there is a loss of performance with IDE over SATA, in most cases, this is actually not true.
