Ice anyone?

Two questions about ice: 1. Will there be any available in Connemara after the race and 2. Whats the consensus on icing/stretching - currently I'm icing a shin splint to keep it at bay after every run, giving it about 20 minutes. Stretching around that area afterwards seems to be a bit futile - presumably I should be doing it the other way around?

I had shin splints a few years ago, and found icing and stretching to be useless. The only thing that helped was to back off for a while.

On the plus side, once I got over them they never returned.

If you can find someone in your area that does Active Release or Graston, I'd give them a call. They're very common ways of treating soft tissue injuries in North America, but for some reason haven't been picked up by many practitioners in Ireland. I've had quite a few Connemara runners coming in with calf strains, shin splints, and groin pulls over the past few weeks. It's aggressive therapy and gets results much faster than home stretching, icing, TENS machine, etc...

PM me if you need a referral in your area.

There won't be ice. There were problems last year with people having to wait up to 25 minutes for water. Your best bet is to have a pal nearby with ice in a cool bag and water.
