Driving in Fog

Well this morning was just ridiculous. Some of the driving on the N2 Dual Carriageway was simply suicidal.

Motorists in the right hand lane jumping into the left lane to undertake at 100km plus only to jump back in to the right lane and jam on the brakes when they were finally able to see the car in front.

So many cars with the no fog lights on.

I drove in the left lane at a steady 60 km/h keeping a large distance with the car in front and the car behind obliged with the same. And in fairness, everyone that stuck to the left lane was doing fine.

But the speed and level of tail gating in the right hand lane was astonishing.

Saw it myself on the M1 last night. Two Polish lads tailgating at 120 km/h + Northbound, all it took was one dawdler in the overtaking lane (another of my pet hates) and there would've been carange. I sat in the inside lane, hit cruise control at 90-100km/h and kept my eyes peeled.

There was a dash of fog this morning about the harbour, but will burn off quickly. June is our foggy month. Fools drive on the freeways bumper-to-bumper at 80-100 kms, following each other's tail lights, cause they cannot see. If someone goes off the roadway, everyone follows for a multiple fender-bender. So Cal is known for super pile ups in the fog.

I agree %110 - THE most annoying aspect to driving particularly on narrow rural roads is meeting oncoming 4x4's with front fog lights on - they should be hauled off the road. rant over for now

I find that really annoying to. Cars or jeeps doing it wrecks me snot. Ya be blind on the bike sometimes. Nothing full beams dont sort out though.
Off topic but I cant stand when people say 110% or anything over 100% really. Its illogical. Grr. Next week on "what grinds my gears" ......

I have no problems passing cars with the front fogs on ( i dont do that myself) but what really annoys me is when I come up to a car that has its rear foglights on a perfectly clear night.

What really gets me are the morons with no lights on in fog who think "its daytime i dont need lights now "

Staggered by the amount of cars with no lights whatsoever just appearing put of the heavy fog in the last few days.

I have my dims on ALL the time. Bright daylight I'll still turn them on. You might aswell make yourself as visable as possible. No one can say you didn't have your lights on in the case of dark conditions either.

Fog lights are infuriating though. I get the feeling that some drivers turn the rears on all the time. Idiots.

What we need is a law requiring motorists to use foglights in clear conditions and turn them off in fog, it works for everything else.

In reality they should be given penalty points and / or fines. There's nothing like losing €50 a couple of times to make you change your bad habits. But the Garda Traffic Corps is only interested in shooting speeding fish in motorway barrels.

The main problem with having a law against it is the garda could think it was turned on when it isn't because he is sensitive to light sources. This can be dependant on conditions even down to how much sleep you have had or how much time you have been in the dark or in doors with dim light can affect how you perceive such things so it would be impossible to enforce properly IMO.

There has got to be a better way like a light that comes on the back of the car when fog lights are on and a garda can pull someone over to check if it has been disabled (really if your going to this level of effort to break the law they should just take your license off you).
