heres a clip of one of the drum production experiments ive been doing in AP studios - this is my 40 year old ludwig , with a 1979 402 snare .

minimal miking ( overheads , snare , outside kick , two rooms )

and little eq ( nothing major )

bass drum is empty with a closed front head and felt tape inside .

Just out of curiousity what mics/pres did you use on it?

Very sweet sounding kit and room btw.

also out of curiosity for the benefit of a non-drummer who was recently reading about basic drum recording techniques, how do you have the kick mic'd?

    Lovely sound for sure

    thanks for the comments ,
if you look close you can see the kick mic out in front of the kick
    its a large , valve condenser .
overheads are ribbons , rooms are small omnis snare is m201

i will have to check on the pres , i think a chandler tg1 and a very nice tl audio and the other - must check .

the room has a large effect , Antimo has some amazing diffusers set up in perfect spots , so although the room is not big , it sounds big if miced properly - of course , this kit helps as its so thin and resonant it feels like you are playing the room , not just the kit . both work very well in tandem.

always makes me feel sick going back to my home studio after this one (((

Still and all, good to know that you can go somewhere and get that sound. One of the difficulties of hurried days in recording studios is getting a good sounding drum recording, and/or finding a studio with someone working there who is familiar with the acoustics of their space and how to manipulate things to best effect.

trust me , it isnt just drums , this studio and the guy that runs it has a special something , the stuff recorded there and mixed by him has a real 3d image / presence thats compelling .

This is getting the auld memory going.

I used to have one of these when I used to play in D'bands / on D'drums etc...

It belongs to my Father.. who used to play in showbands (Guitar) back in the day.. then was a Drummer over in the UK with various lots.. thats where he probably picked it up.

His is nowhere near the condition of this particular kit here (its missing a few fittings here & there, odd scratch here & there) .. but still nice to see it in its original context.

Its bright red & has this really fantastic sparkle to it.

    It even looked great dusty!

Used to love the sound out of it. Was very tight & punchy. The Kick was so firm sounding. Great kit. I smashed the crash once.. and a hihat. He was pretty p'd off. They were Paiste.. so were probably the originals with the kit - from looking at some of the spec's online. Relics by that stage so!

I always thought it performed way better than the Pearls that everyone else around here was playing at the time.. But that was probably just bias! :pac:
