I'm thinking of buying the 3G Iphone over the weekend but I heard today that a new smaller version one is to be released possibly in the summer. I had a quick search on the Web but couldn’t find any information about his.

I'm basically wondering if anyone has any info when this will be released if it’s the next few months and if I would be foolish to not to wait.

    Thank you. :)

you'll only find rumours until the product is launched by Apple, it's a strong possibility that a new iPhone will be launched in the summer but there's no launched date or official word on it yet.

It's very likely that a new iPhone will be launched this summer, though not necessarily a smaller one. It'll probably have a better camera with video.

If it makes you feel any better Vanbis, I'm in the same boat. I'm probably a few days away from buying one myself. I don't think I can hold out much longer :)

Because of the way the iPhone is configured, any new version can really only give you hardware tweaks as by and large the vast majority of the iPhone's functionality is embedded in the software.

What it will probably have in the next release is a better camera, actual GPS, slightly faster internal components (RAM/processor), more memory (32 and/or 64GB I'd say) and maybe one or two other things.

None of which interest me all that much. :)

And I would be the opposite. :)

I need more storage, 32Gb will do me (for now), everything else is a bonus.

Personally, I am holding off until the Summer to see if a new model is in fact released. I would be sick to think that I bought the current model, only for a new model to be released a few months later (exactly what happened to me last year).

Also going to wait (probably going to take up to 4 months) - hopefully better camera, more storage, faster processor - but, most importantly - better battery!!

Have a SE 750i that's on it's last legs too

Its win win one way or another for you Keith

You either wait for the new one and get the new model.

    -OR-

You decide against the new one when its released and there will be tons of iphone 3g's on the market from the Apple fanatic who simply must have the latest one.

I have to disagree about the battery life of either the iphone 2g or iphone 3g though. Any one i've ever had has had a fantastic battery life of 2-3 days with relatively high usage

Really? I only get a day out of my 3G with very light usage.

Wait it out, I'm 99% sure there will be a new iPhone this summer (it's June and details of a 2,1 iPhone accessing websites are all over the place since last October) and don't be tempted by offers or cheaper prices - they are trying to clear the stock (just like AT&T in the States, now selling the iPhone for $600 without a contract).

    Have patience :)

Am going to wait too I think. I actually had ordered a iPhone via O2.ie but 24 hours later my order was still "pending" meaning they still hadn't accepted it. So I hit cancel.

I also tried phoning their shop in Dundrum to see if they had stock and got an answering machine straight away. An omen me thinks :)

Yeah too many rumours about new hardware!
    Even 4 unknown devices: http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/19/iphone-os-3-0-beta-references-four-unknown-products/

4 months is a long time to wait though!

Don't start saying that Keith, my resolve to wait is weakening by the day :)

Sneaky O2. Their website said my order was still "pending" yet it didn't stop them charging my credit card. Let's hope the cancellation actually worked and they refund it.
