Pubs in Cardiff to watch the match

While not giving up entirely on getting a match ticket, the very probable Plan B is to watch it in the pub - not having been to Cardiff previously, has anyone got advice on the best places?

    Thanks

These pubs are in the city:

    The City Arms, Quay Street

Flyhalf and Firkin, St Mary's Street

    Blah Blah's, St Mary's Street

Y Mochyn Du, Sophia Close, Pontcanna

The Blackweir Tavern, North Road (is about 20 mins outside the city)

St Mary's Street is like a minute away from the Stadium.
The best pubs are the Flyhalf or the Mochyn Du and have the best atmospheres.
When you get to Cardiff just ask around, I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. Don' worry, contrary to popular belief, we're quite friendly.

    No worries.

Cardiff isn't a very big city. There are only two train stations for the city area.
But in the evening, you should try to get down to Cardiff Bay. That's where the nice bars and restaurants are. There are buses and trains to get down there, and a taxi ride should only be a couple of pounds.

Try the wee bar in Cardiff Arms park. They have a big screen which they put up in the car park when weather is good and Saturday is supposed to be a lovely day. Might try there myself for a few before the game.

If you are not entirely giving up on getting a ticket your best bet would be to hang around the stadium prior to the match and try and bag one. That means you would be best to stay close to the stadium pubwise in order to watch the match if you didn't manage to get a ticket. Luckily the stadium is right in the centre of Cardiff and O'Neills pub is 2 minutes walk from the entrance. It will be packed for the game but it might clear out when ticketholders start heading to the actual stadium 20 minutes before kick off.

All the bars will be full of Welshies but at least in O'neills (an Irish bar where they have a large screen) you may be accompanied by a higher proportion of Irish! Do you really want to be the lone Irish person celebrating in a bar full of Welsh people (who are rugby crazy) when Ireland win the 6 nations :P

Don't worry about that - the average Welsh rugby supporter is nothing like the goons that hang around internet forums, they're welcoming, friendly and can take a loss without losing the head.

I watched the '05 GS game in the City Arms, was a cracking spot for the game, and a great day. Included a very funny exchange with a girl - she asks "can I have your flag?" - so I tell her "You'd have to swap me something" - she says "How about my phone number?"

Cardiff's pretty rubbish for Irish pubs (O'Neills not actually being irish pubs, and there's 2 of them). Kitty Flynns on St Mary's st and Dempsy's just opposite the castle will be decent.

Most of the bigger clubs will have big screens set up - was in walkabout for ireland wales last year, huge screen sadly ruined by loud crap music instead of punditry at every opportunity, and that everyone walks through you for a shortcut - slightly further from the stadium (5/10 minute walk) is grey friars rd, lots of pubs and clubs - they should all be packed but worth heading that direction when everywhere round the stadium has a queue to get in.
They often put a big screen up by the museum if wales are about to win - haven't heard any mention of that yet sadly...

You can forget drinking in a pub before the game. More like drinking on the street! Damn it's warm out. Mary Street will be closed off and people will be spilling out onto the streets to catch the sun. Should be a blast. :D
