I'm getting bars and a "DTT Test Message" in place of TV3 this morning - given Three Rock has been on-air for quite a long time - seems a bit strange. Is TV 3 off DTT elsewhere too ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

TV3 and TG4 have been replaced by test cards off and on on various transmitters over the past number of weeks - see the postings.
The service is in test and is subject to interruption!

I noticed the postings for the other TX's but can't say I've seen any Bars in place of a "live" channel from Three Rock before - not even during the previous "trial". I was hoping it may have been a test from Kippure ! Aw well.

Should we have a thread where people can post if they see that screen and on what channel.

This thread merged with an existing thread, and title changed (again).

I'd appreciate if Testcard discussion can be kept within this thread.

I'd also like DTT tests discussion specific to transmitters to go within their own thread (eg. "[DTT] Tests @ Cairn Hill") in an effort to keep things easy.

For reasons of tidyness, I'd prefer not stickying each thread (many don't bother reading stickys anyway, and the Search feature works well!).

Mt Leinster is still on air - viewing it at the moment. I have noticed that the power is down on what it was. That might explain why you have no signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 90 ✭✭patrick whitty

thank you slegs signal only 20%.

TV3 has gone off air again the last couple of nights and has been replaced with a test-card(3 Rock-maybe others also). When this happened the first time, there were lots of posts on Boards.

There have been no recent posts about this on Boards. Clearly nobody cares any more if TV3 goes off air. Is it any wonder they are in trouble financially. If nobody is watching them, why would advertisers pay to use them? Most of their content is available on free-to-air satellite from UK.

It seems they don't bother to take DTT Public Service Broadcasting seriously and they must have been waiting for Boxer to support their launch on DTT.

I for one won't be bothering to hook up my analogue aerial connection just to receive TV3.

    Hold your horses there...

This is a test, not a trial!

The channels can come and go as much as they please. The current DTT tests are by no means an up and running service.

Expect a lot of this for the foreseeable.

    From RTENL
    Digital Roll Out

RTÉNL is undertaking DTT technical test transmissions in a number of areas. This is being done to verify the engineering integrity of the systems and to confirm coverage.

These test transmissions will operate for varying durations and are subject to regular variations and prolonged interruptions. The test transmissions will cease in the majority of areas once testing is complete and permanent transmissions will not commence until the service is formally launched by the broadcasters.

Under no circumstances should the test transmissions be considered an operational service
    .

The hexadecimal test-card is much more interesting to watch than the normal TV3 programme content ;)

You seemed to be pretty disppointed that it is gone from DTT so I think you should.

I like to watch DTT on the MacBook using eyetv. Was wondering why/where TV3 had disappeared, this explains. Having to revert back to analogue :(

Agreed. There's no reason why they even need to carry live broadcasting at all. They could easily have test cards on all four channels permanently. Since it's a test they can do as they please.

    just a question?
what tests do they do ,when transmitting the testcard Tv3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 967 ✭✭✭Rippy

TV3 back on from Mullaganish this evening.
Just treat ANY live channels received as a bonus during the test period.

Not 100% certain, but my guess is the average bit rate and BER (Bit Error Rate) is being tested when a testcard is on.
Should be more consistent with a continuous picture.
