My window was smashed in a handbag snatch yesterday. In the bag was the spare key.
Today the Mazda dealer in my town took a look at the key and said a replacement would be 220 euro.
I know about the chip etc but still thought this was a rip off. I rang a dealer in the north and in euro he said we would drive away with the new key for 83 euro chipped etc.
Annoyed even more I rang another Mazda dealer outside my county. He will do it for 80 euro all done, chip etc, able to drive away.
Rant over. if I ever have to go into the first garage again I will grab my ankles and reverse shuffle in their door. Thanks for reading folks...

You might want to get the old key disabled asap - if there was any form of i.d. in the handbag and the thief can trace the car key to your house, the car might go missing.

What is the dealer quoting you for €220? Is it the exact same as the others? If so, why don't you just say it to your local dealer?

The exact same work. Order a key with chasis no. get it cut and have its chip matched to my vehicle. I know the guy who quoted me Ex-army the same as me. Looked me in the eye and pulled this figure out of the sky.
They also quoted me 365 euro for an oil and filter service on my Bt 50. I dont know if this was dear or not but they are not getting this money either.. Ive thought about them comming back and your right. They don't have address but there are enough scare stories about!
Ive thought about going back. He had the key in his hand and was definate about the quote. I said to him it was obiviously an insurance rip off and he shrugged his shoulders. I'm no shrinking violet but when I went in for a price I didn't mention I was covered. He is not the biggest of blokes. I might wedgie him next time I see him. God how funny would would that be for his boss to walk in and have him hung out of the top of the door by his jocks. Havent done that since '91. Devoy Bks Naas.

It's worth doing for peace of mind - the garage will set the ECU to ignore all keys, and then add back just the ones that you still have possession of.
The guy with the stolen key might be able to unlock the car with the key, but (if fitted) the alarm will go off and he will not be able to start the car (chip in his key will be ignored).

I am surprised he didn't steal the car when he had the chance.

Is anybody else as suprised as I am that the spare key was in the handbag, in the car?

It wasnt the spare key. It belonged to my wife. We were done over in the middle of knowwhere. I used live in the city centre in Dublin and saw plenty of random crime. The garda who came is no innocent but it was the first such case in this area as far as he can remember.
Dozens of cars and houses are left wide open down here still. Crime is not at levels beared by other people in differant areas to us. This scumbag was going to rob no matter what. I was held up by knife point near O'Connel Bridge many moons ago in a phone booth of all places. So you would of been surprised to find that I had money on me? No? But I was in the City Center on my own.
I was a lone young male. It was still bright. The lanes of traffic were beside me. where do you stop being surprised? People should be allowed have a key out of sight even in their vehicle. Must tell the wife not to wear a mini skirt as would people not be "surprised" if harm came her way. Your going down the road of putting blame on victims.
I wonder how many are as surprised as you were that we couldnt leave a key in our own vehicle where the crime rate doubles in this area if a cow is rustled. But yeah in your eyes we're still partially at fault. Give him a concurrent sentence judge sure they were asking for it.

From reading the initial post, I, and apparently others, assumed it was a standard "lone female driver, handbag on the passenger seat" scenario. I was initially bemused as to why you'd have the spare key in your handbag while driving the car.

I don't think anyone thinks it's unreasonable for both parties in the car to have a set of keys of them.
