As far as I am concerned, EMS workers are frackin' heroes.

    Ok, I'm guessing you dont hear this a lot.

    I've never been "In Trouble" and have been inside a police station once to get docs signed but I have certainly gotten myself into more then my fair share of trouble and needed to rely on the EMS services from time to time or have found myself in some pretty screwy situations along side them (my life has a habit of doing that to me, all on its lonesome).

    I consider the EMS (a ridiculously generic term) to be absolute heroes as far as I am concerned. I've ridden in ambulances with guys who were frankly astonishing at what they do, so much so that I watched them work with complete fascination. I've seen firemen perform emergency aid with a calm professionalism that was genuinely reassuring and worked with cops tracking online paedo's (above HSCCIU for those that know) who went above and beyond in a personal capacity.

    Are you perfect? Dude, I've lived most of my life in Dublin 1 when response times can be measured in days sometimes :) ... I had friends in the May Day "riots" (an event I consider a stain on AGS) but I'm capable of distinguishing "general approach" from "specific poor judgment".

    Every day that you put on that uniform, be you an ambulance worker, a cop, a fireman, sea-rescue, whatever, its like some super hero routine in my head, except you arent super heroes, if you were I wouldnt think highly of you, but I know you're just regular people trying their best to hold the fncking line. Failing sometimes? Yeah... Succeeding most of the time.... But trying all the time and its the last bit that makes you heroes.

    So when you pull on your suit tonight understand that there are some of us out here who recognise that.

    DeV.

    Hope you dont mind Dev but I have changed the heading and your post to say EMS instead of ERU and for 2 reasons -
    1. cant have Emergency Response Unit getting all the credit even for fighting fires and dealing with patients
    2. I was becoming scared of you when you said you needed the ERU for help every now and then. Christ even the Commish probably doesnt get any help from the ERU :p

    We all know what you mean and thanks to my modding skills everyone knows what you mean.

    But thanks anyways, we are human

    And here's the rant I wanted to post on the "things people dont know" thread about the long hours of public service doctors (not quite EMS but still topically currently!)

    <rant>
    It absolutely boils my temper when people (primaraily public sector workers) have to work ridiculously long hours as standard. Healthcare is a particular bug bear of mine.

    When I objected to the junior doctor injecting me (he was on his feet 20 hours and yawning) he was absolutely shocked. Honestly he didnt know what to say (I was very polite but firm). Then he looks at me, goes to walk away, turns back to me and sheepishly says... (get this)... "No, really.... come on..." and vaguely waved the needle at me. When I politely refused again he was truely dumbfoudned and eventually said "I'll have to tell Matron you know" (like this was something dreadful). "Tell Matron, off you go!" I told him cheerily...

    Matron arrived, apparently from Russia but without the love, and was a total battleaxe. She was utterly unsympathetic, opening with the line "now now Mr Murphy, whats all this nonsense" didnt break stride, turned to the doc and (im not kidding here) clapped her hands twice and said "inject this man".

    I stopped being polite right about then.

    Suffice it to say that I roared at her for a good few minutes so that everyone in the department heard let alone the ward and finished by telling her that I was perfectly sound of mind, capable of refusing medication and was clearly refusing this because I objected to the state of the staff member giving it to me and if she forced me to have it, I'd sue the pants off the her, the hospital and anyone else I could find and I would settle with the hospital ONLY when I had her nursing license. She left without another word with the doctor in tow..

    But just as she left the ward he looked around the door to be sure she was gone, looked back at me, and gave me a fierce "thumbs up" sign like he was in some kind of resistance movement with me.... :)

    About 2 minutes later another doctor who claimed she was only on duty an hour came and gave me the injection. I told her "I'm going to go check the roster you know" and she laughed at me and said "I believe you".

    I'm not the Taoiseach, I have no power other then to give you guys a voice here as best I can but I'm DAMNED if I'm going to play ball when I dont have to.

    </rant>

    DeV.
