I know Mobile Broadband isn't great but looking for back-up for an equally poor wireless service... Also need mobile broadband for occasional use when I'm out on the road with the laptop... Would be mainly used for sending photos (large jpeg files)...

Is there any direct comparison of the 3 v Vodafone v O2 mobile broadband products?

It depends where you are. All are poor for upload. Getting only 50kbps even when download is 2000kbps is not unusual.

You may have problems with site access and IP based security/blocking with 3

    meteor has also launched.

O2 and Meteor have EDGE on GSM as well as 3G/HSDPA which gives better coverage and sometimes x2 upload speed of 3G/HSDPA. (up to 245kbps).

Vodafone has GPRS on GSM as fall back, which is 10kbps to 70kbps.

    3 is 3G/HSDPA/HSPA only.

See Midband subforum. (This thread is wrong forum).

Thanks for that. So what you are saying is
    All mobile broadband is unreliable
Particularly poor for upload e.g. e-mailing photos
Vodafone has GPRS on GSM as fall back, which is 10kbps to 70kbps so might make it best option in poor reception areas

O2 & Meteor's EDGE on GSM is about x10 better than GPRS on GSM and they have GPRS too.

But it depends on your locations as to if Vodafone or O2 is better.

take everything you read here with a pinch of salt...

a different provider may provide better service depending on your location..

i tried voda, and it was very slow in my location, slower than dialup. i then tried o2 and it was much better, i was happy with it, as it met my requirements,

i often get higher speeds than this; and i find it to be very reliable.

best bet is to see if you know anyone with mobile broadband in the main area you will use it.. as a different provider may suit you better. i know of someone who swears by 3... and says it works great in his area... it all depends on what location you plan to use it most.. most providers offer a trial period where you can try it, and return it if it doesent meet your expectations..

    You should try:

    Meteor
    O2
    Vodafone
    3

    In order.

Even though most of the companies provide coverages maps they are usually generalized!

If you really won't to compare what you can expect in your main location, find out what masts or in your area and what types of connection the masts or enable for. By visiting this askcomreg: mobile site viewer.
