Good practice for the hill climb time trial in the club league.

Someone at the top, someone at the bottom. Watches synced... off ya go.

What kind of times are you folk putting in from the gate to the top?

Must check my Garmin but think I took somewhere in the region of 22 minutes for this....I'd say I'd be getting lapped by the time I made it to the top:o

The back gates of UCD surely ? ;)

Melanie and I would be up for the hill climb too - some Tuesday?

Yeh I dunno about my 22 minute figure just based on glancing at Garmin in a jaded state at the top, might be remembering it right might be wrong.

It's 3km with 300 metres ascent or thereabouts so an average of 10% gradient if I'm right. For me 10km/h on 10% gradient isn't far off, and that'd give 18 minutes for the climb.

Very interested to hear others' times so I know what's a respectable time to aim for.

I did it as part of a hill climb race in 2007 from the N11. My figures are

    Distance: 3.3km
Climb: 220m (it was very windy and cold that day, could be off)
    Time: 11:37

The climb from the N11 was 49 minutes, 20km, 735m climb.

Did it last September on the single speed in 13.34 - hard work at the top though!

how tough are the climbs out that way? ive only really got howth to compare to.
im asuming they're longer climbs, but are they much steeper?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

There is as steep on Howth but the ones in Wicklow are much longer.

Sounds like a plan, we may need some sort of handicap system mind if you are taking part :)

well there goes everyone elses chances of winning!

I'm sure we can find a suitable handicap... Could get a few MTBers out too, see how it goes.

What time would it have to be bright until.
Giving pretty big time estimates. 30 minutes to do the climb (plus hang around), an hour to get back to the city limits. Sunset is at 8pm at the end of March - what time for a kickoff would suit others?

Is this a dirt-track or is it tarmac?

I was up there today. Glorious.

It's tarmac all the way, with a few potholes and LOTS of loose gravel in the center of the road.

Went up Kippure for the first time today. Didn't think it was too bad til i turned left over the bridge & then looked up! Sweet Jeebas, those last 500m or so were painful! An awkward cross/headwind didn't help much either. Made it in 14:48 which I thought wasn't too bad. The combination of crosswinds & loose gravel made for hairy enough descent at times. Glad I did it though, will certainly be giving it another go.
