Which New Wheels?

OK the wheels that came with my Giant SCR C3 are crap. Spokes keep coming loose and it's becoming a pain. So I've decided a new wheelset is needed.

It's not something I'm familiar with and was looking at getting something like this.

    http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=89&idproduct=18949

I don't plan on doing any racing just a few sportives and weekend group rides. Is it too much to spend which is probably a silly question..of course it's not!!!

Anyway advice is welcome as always.

    Easton EA90 SLX Wheelset 2008 From €414.19

    Same claimed weight, much cheaper.

I like Fulcrums, so would suggest Fulcrum Racing Ones -a little heavier, but nice wheels.

Alternately, there's the DT Swiss Mon Chasseral that are very light (I think Blorg has similar), or you can go for a custom build -something like Ultegra hubs 125g and 254g (F/R) on Mavic Open Pro rims (425g each) from somewhere like Parker International -Front wheel is 170eur, rear 252 for a sub 1300g wheelset -well, 1229g plus spokes.

Oh, and if I was going to spend €700+ on a non-aero factory wheelset and wasn't worried about racing, I'd get a set of HED Ardennes at £649.00.

Don't worry I've no problem spending less. I'm just afraid to buy something that'll give me the same crap as I already have. I just want something that'll be good and I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I want something that'll stay true and be a nice wheel.

Well, TBH, the only problem I have is what to upgrade to :).... 404s I'd say.

Its too much for what your using them for....look for around 500 and save the rest of the money for a new bike :-).

That's handy as I commute to Finglas. I don't bring the road bike though.

Totally bullet proof !! I'm on my 4th set and have never had a problem ,my SL's (the red spoke one with the carbon hub) at 3 years old have almost 10000 miles done. totally true and still don't even need the hubs serviced

I have the SLs and they have been great. The cone on the front comes loose a little bit every now and then.

    I'm happy with the purchase.

    Rob,

I'm a bit confused. DO you have the SL's or elites?

And how come your on your 4th set if you've never had a problem with them?

why would anyone go for the premiums over the vanilla sl? very marginal difference for a not-insignificant price jump.

given your budget and your light weight, i'd be very tempted by these. now sub 1400g (2009 model) and they have ceramic bearings. You can go for more lightly built wheels more safely than some of our beefier posters i'd say.

As Tiny says, I have DT Swiss RR1450s and am very happy with them. Light and servicable. You might get them built a bit cheaper, they are RR1.1 rims, 240s hubs and Aerolite spokes, 28 front and back.

Sorry pre lunch hypo's made me confused. SE's for the past 2 years still have them, Just got SL premiums for a new bike. Had the original ones 8 years ago think they were simply called Kysirium SSC's (think they're in the attic !) and there was a set of SL's which were on a bike I sold (which were 4 years old).

hmmm ... Wheels..... my favorite topic !! ok so I have a pair of flashpoint FP60 deep rims, 2008 ...1000 quid .... too much for sportives ... i mostly use these on my TT bike....
I run mavic open pro on Ulegtra hubs for racing this time of year fast light wheel, but very stong, and serviceable !!!!!
Humphries cycles have loads of these built up 250 a pair, i am actually replacing my set for new ones, 2.5 seasons of racing on them .... if ya wanna go bling, go Dura ace hubs on the same rim for about 330 a pair,

Another wheelset that I used to race on, which I still have, are Mavic Cosmic Elites, they are around 300 - 250 a pair, more aerodynamic than a regular rim, but light, and noticeably FASTER !! .....not FASTER than FP's or ZIPP's thoiugh !!! but would around nicely on a Sportive without breaking the bank !!!

I have been spening a lot of cash on cycling gear (shirts/shorts etc) in past few months.
Should I continue in order to perfect my look, or should I stop, save a bit and buy ew wheels, such as some of the ones suggested above?:)

I mean, new wheels will probably not make a difference at my level, but at least with new kit, at least I think I look good when looking in the mirror first thing in the morning.

Firstly this forum is not the place to ask for sensible advise on how to spend your money. I'm over 4k this year already (did buy a new bike though) !!

Also according to my wife/sister/mother/all non cycling friends you will never look good in cycling gear no matter how cool we think we are :(

What? You mean I shouldn't wear me bike jerseys as casual clothing any more?

Seriously though, if you are wearing tight bike gear, always make sure to have a bike within arms length. Failure to follow this rule will result in you looking extremely odd.

My wife actually refused to leave the house with me on Sunday until I had changed out of my baggy cycling shorts and an appropriately coordinated top.

    I despair.

So, what you guys are saying is buy bike gear, but buy at least one set of the aformentioned wheels also.
Think I may save for wheels.

yep that's sounds right, get yourself some super wheels .... I also forgot to mention, I have a set of Shimano RS20 on my Winter Trainer, I think they were about 150 sterling, but they are a super wheelset with a similar feel to the Comsic elites .....
These are new from Shimano, replacing the older 105 etc wheel sets .....
