Oil Usage...

I was driving on the M4 yesterday when my oil light came on, Had another 10 miles before the next turn off but got some oil put 1l in it...

I had the car serviced 3 months ago and an oil change was done, however I've done 5k miles since is it normal to burn that much oil that quickly ?

Its a VW golf 99 SDI (93k miles on it ), my last car a fiesta never needed topped up between services.

Would driving the car a bit faster cause it to burn more oil ?

Your car isn't that new any more. Some will burn more than other based on LOTS of factors over its lifetime (for a start, I'd love to see the FSH to verify the mileage on a VAG diesel- only rarely are they not subjected to stiff mileage).

My car is '98 with 130k on it and it'll burn 1L every thousand miles. That means it must be topped up regularly. It doesn't mean it's shagged. My mechanic says it's not brilliant but it's not that bad either...

It is always possible your garage did not put sufficient oil in.

Its possible but I've used the same mechanic for years and never had problems...

I should mention I only got this car a few months ago so just trying to figure out if this useage could / will be normal for the car.

My hirlfriend has a Golf MKIV (2002) and it eats oil, I have to put in Litre in it every month or two.
    Crappy engine

Could be that your motor just uses that much oil. You should certainly check the dipstick more often than every 3 months.

None but Its most likely cheap diesel oil of some sort....

Any sugestions for better stuff ? I got some at the nearest garage so prob not the best but will keep it going :)

How much oil would you normally put into a golf ? Anyone know ?

I'd put the best recommended oil in for the car, putting cheap oil in is a false economy, it's going to cost you in the end.

I had a 2000 mk4 1.4 and it drank oil. Think its common with the golfs....

Castrol have a freefone helpline to recomend the right type depending on which car, Castrol is good stuff too and not quite as expensive as some of the other stuff. I can't find the number here in work but do a look for it.

I've got a 98 BMW 320i which also goes through oil very rapidly. I have to put a litre in every 7-800 miles, sometimes more. There's no noticeable smoke coming out of the exhaust and definitely no leaks in the under carriage. I guess it's part of the card getting old, it's got 115k miles on it now. Apart from that, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I've never had any issues with it and always starts first time.

I'm picking up a 2nd hand Volvo S40 from a mate this weekend as it happens as I'm tired of having to check the oil ever other week. Plus it has lost of toys to play with, air co, cruise control, leather seats etc. (Beamers are always scabby with the extras in the Irish market). He says he never has to put oil in it between services so it will be a nice change from having to go to Halfords every month.

You could look in to getting the engine overhauled but you'll probably find the price of doing so isn't worth it in the long run. You may have to accept the fact that your car likes a bit of oil to keep her going.

1L / 5000 miles isn't to bad from the sounds of what people are saying... I don't mind its only 6e or so for it so not really an expense, Car runs perfect just wondering if anyone else had similar things happening :)....
