A friend has a 03 golf tdi 130 bhp with the 6 speed box and 1st and 2nd gear have dissapeared, any idea of what could be the problem. All other gears engage fine.
Wonder is it the selector cables?
    Thanks lads!

Why is the selector cables a new one?Dont they all have two cables from the stick to the top of the box?

Nope. As above, though you should get one for 1500 if your lucky.....

How are the gears changed so,what goes between the stick and the box?Looked like two cables to me??

gearbox linkage is what you are talking about carchaeologist. More like metal rods than cables.

Your gearbox is probably nackered tbh. Does it actually go it first and second positions using the gearstick

I'd say its the selector forks inside the gearbox that's the problem, they are known for going on vag boxes.

As above, budget for a new gearbox or recondition your own one. You may need a new clutch and dual mass flywheel depending on the amount of wear on them.

The cost or removing the box, repairing the problem (if they can) and replacing the old box, you would have a second hand box in for the same money. Second hand boxes come with a year guarentee so they should be tested.
I had to replace my box with 64k on the car, (6-speed also) - main bearing went. Common fault apparently. Weak boxes.
Not good news i'm afraid. As said above, it will be at least €800 for the box not including labour. Big job too.
    Sorry.

Aye,she went to her mechanic and it seems its the selectors in the gearbox alright, some ball bearings went somewhere they shouldnt have:rolleyes:
AFAIK the mechanic is reconditioning the box.
Thanks for the help all the same lads

I thought these were heavy duty cables, they were sleeved similar to brake cables on a bike. There was no selection at all of 1st and 2nd,completely dead at the stick.Ta for that:)
