Was unsuccessfully searching the internet for the answer to the fairly basic question of what the anthem arrrangements at Irish internationals were prior to the introduction of Ireland's Call in 1995. Anyone know?

didnt we just play the national anthem while some of the Ulster contingent werent too pleased?

listening to the amazing sound of O' Flower of scotland at the weekend and with the great Irish support that travelled ill admit even all these years later I was dissapointed again that our real national anthem wasnt played but... meh

As far as i remember, only ahmrann na bhfiann was sung before international games. I can remember the likes of David Tweed, a dyed in the wool orangeman, standing stoney faced during it.

Cheers. Yeah Flower of Scotland is an amazing song. I got about 200 people around me on Saturday to sing Amhran na bhFhiann while Ireland's Call was playing... I felt quite ashamed before the Italy match when you could barely hear the Irish sing while the italians belted out Fratelli d'Italia with such gusto.

Much as I detest "Ireland's Call" at least many people know the words. My memories of Lansdowne Road in the 1970s were of the National Anthem being poorly sung, with much miming to hide embarrassment and with a huge roar as it ended. In the past various RUC men and N.I. Unionists played for Ireland and like many of the other players on the team did not join in the singing. While I am an unapologetic Southern Unionist I feel that as the team is the 'National' team the Irish National Anthem is the correct one to play whatever about the state of the singing or political sensitivities. I am sure most players are concentrating on the game ahead rather than worrying about who sings what. :)

    Come on Munster Ireland!
