Weird thing just happened. I got a notice in the post to say I was caught speeding. I was doing 68kms in what I think is a 50kms zone - however the thing is that on the ticket it said that the speed limit on the road was 120kms. This was obviously a mistake but I thought nothing of it, and planned to pay the fine over the next few days, however the next day I got another letter saying:

"In reference to your letter dated xxx, a decision has been taken to say that you have no obligations in respect of this notice and no further action is required on your part"

Thing is, i did not write any letter! Weird!

A mate told me if they make a mistake it gets scrapped and you get away with it. Perhaps the mistake was made on all of them that day and not just mine.

    Happy Days!

Well you were doing 782kms under the speed limit so maybe they were ticketing you for going too slow?

Someone else wrote a letter and they reviewed all the cases, hence you got a second letter. Well done.

I better pay the one I has in front of me here. :(

how long does it generally take for gardai to notify you that you were over the speed limit?

Anywhere between 1 week to 3 months.

but don't they have up to 6 months if they wish?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,472 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Not really, if they issue after 3 months the offender can frustrate proceedings easily.

They have to issue a summons within 6 months of the offence and they can't issue during the 56 day payment window.

OP, keep that letter. There was someone on here complaining recently about getting the same thing, then receiving a summons or further penalty...can't quite remember. Stick it in with your Insurance/NCT cert so you keep it safe, just in case.

Really? So after 6 months they cant prosecute you via a summons? Now is that 6 months from offence or from non-payment? (Actually I suppose they would be two different summonses (sp))

6 months from the offence date. They must apply to the court for a summons within 6 months, that does not mean the court date will be within the 6 months. The court date could easily be a year or more after the date of the offence.

There will only be one summons for the speeding. You don't have to pay if you don't want to. ;)

    "kms" ???

    Kilometres per second?

    68kms = 244,800 Km/h = 152,111 Mph = Mach 200 (approx.)

I'd be framing that letter. :D

    Carry on...
