The Irish paradox

Given the day that's in it, here's one thing that bugs me about Ireland.

We had a recession. People whinged that there were no jobs.

We had a boom. People whinged that they couldn't see this "boom".

The boom continued. People whinged that there were underpaid.

We had a sustained period of economic growth and wages went up twice a year. People whinged that there were too many immigrants coming to scab off us.

We had huge inflation because of all of these wage increases. People whinged that things were cheaper in the North (conveniently forgetting that wages are cheaper there too).

We had a building boom. People whinged that they couldn't get on the property ladder.

We had a property collapse. People whinged that they were in negative equity.

We have a recession. People whinge.

I wish this country would grow up. Why can't we enjoy the good times and persevere the bad times with a bit of dignity?

Because despite my diatribe above, I'm actually an optimist. Probably should have made that clear from the outset!

If we don't whinge, the whole country will collapse, what shall we do instead?

    whine, whine, whine,

    bitch, bitch, bitch,

    moan, moan, moan,

    complain, complain, complain,

    waaa, waaa, waaa.

Ok, and now... to split into two topics, and post on the same forum... ah, job done.

Happy St. Patricks day, btw. Couldn't have picked a worse day, could ya.

We had a recession. People whinged that there were no jobs.

    genuine enough complaint.
We had a boom. People whinged that they couldn't see this "boom".
    The whingers probably didnt.
The boom continued. People whinged that there were underpaid.

    Relatively the whingers probably were.
We had a sustained period of economic growth and wages went up twice a year. People whinged that there were too many immigrants coming to scab off us.

Wages went up twice a year where?
We had huge inflation because of all of these wage increases. People whinged that things were cheaper in the North (conveniently forgetting that wages are cheaper there too).

Inflation was down to lots of people, in fact. Wage increases in the boom were moderate enough. Some industrys fell back - IT for instance.
We had a building boom. People whinged that they couldn't get on the property ladder.

    The whingers couldnt.
We had a property collapse. People whinged that they were in negative equity.
the whingers were in negative equity. Some people are happy with a fall in house prices.
We have a recession. People whinge.

    Valid enough.
I wish this country would grow up. Why can't we enjoy the good times and persevere the bad times with a bit of dignity?

People complain. There are different sets people in Ireland, not all of them complaining at the same time. We cant take happy pills.

Personally I didnt like the boom. It meant that house hunting was impossible ( I held off) and rent was atrocious, and far out of where i wanted. I like the recession since I am still gainfully employed. People who lost out in the recession grumble now, I dont.

    so the answer is.

These are different sets of people

Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery.

Was Roscommon the 'Sandbox' for this program?

    OP, you're the best.

Ireland likes to complain. Shut up Ireland. Blame the government you elected if you like.
