is it time to get rid of her? is she needed, couldn't the country do with the money? think of the value of the land in the phoenix park? what we spend on sending her travelling etc, her hair do money etc etc when her role is really just a ceremonial one.

Well without seeing figures I would say no. The presidency is part of our heritage and part of our nation. It symbolises what we have become as a society. Would like to see her take a pay cut however but I doubt it eats up much more than our ministers. Plus you'd need a constitutional referendum and massive statutory reform in order to get rid of the title. Probably costing millions alone.

but it was dev's vanity that created the role, so he could oversee the government while not being taoiseach when he had used his 9 lives as taoiseach.

    If it aint broke.

She does an excellent job as an ambassador for the country. She was given an honorary masters degree from AIT (lowly I know) but she came and graciously accepted it and gave a very comprehensive speech about the midlands (she has family in Roscommon god help her).

Overall she does quite a large volume of work and travel and she has already taken a pay cut so I say leave her be.

On a side note, it would be prudent of us to send her to meet Obama then the ignorant excuse for a leader we are sending.

What would you do with a beautiful piece of land like that...build apartments?

I honestly think we're going a bit too far with trying to get rid of everything...soon enough there will be nothing left...I'm surprised no one yet has proposed to sell off everything we have in museums to save a few quid...
