Problems with MKV files

    Hey,

I downloaded a bunch of movies at the weekend and I'm having trouble with the mkv files. I have VLC and Windows Media Classic but they won't play on either.

My brother also has VLC and Windows Media Classic, and the movies do work on his laptop. My laptop is new enough and when I try to play then on VLC I get a message saying that there I'm missing a codec or something?

Anybody know how I might be able to rectify this or let me know of an application that will play mkv files.

    Cheers

    Try k-lite codec pack Here

VLC is self-contained and doesnt need to use external codecs as far as I know. So I don't know why it would give you that error message.

I would second a recommendation for the k-lite pack. The CCCP is another recommended pack for playing mkv containers.

Before doing anything, I would scan the videos you are trying to play with an antivirus package, and preferably do a full scan of your system. It is known tactic of some malware to masquerade as a 'video file' and give you a link for a 'codec' (which will just be more nasty stuff).

Thanks lads, I downloaded a version of Windows Media Classic - Home Cinema as well as a codec package and got it to work.

Also did a full scan afterwards, and everything is fine.

    Cheers
