You may need to hone your English first.

    Hey!
I'm guessing that you are talking about ELC- Euro Languages college. I went last year to Clongowes wood. For me it was a good 3 weeks where I learned a bit of French and made a few friends who I still talk to regularly. I'm also hoping this year to be an assistant.

Although personally I'll be honest with you and say that there was a large group (on my course), so for me, it wasn't that easy to get to know people. Mostly people came with friends, like me, and I spent most of my time with them. That was merely the case on my one but you do get to know people through class and activities but I found it to take some time. A girl I know who went on one of their courses said that her course was very cliquish with lots of the 'rugby schools' sticking with their own schoolmates. Towards the end all the guys in the rugby schools were friends with each other, so each course is somewhat different. However you'll do ok as long as you get into it.

As regards French I felt I did improve but I thought I could have done much better had I gone off to France instead. I only felt this because I went off to Spain two years ago and came back fluent after a homestay. In terms of the exam it can prepare you but you do need to make the effort to speak French in order to improve.

In short just be open minded and you'll have good craic! ;)

p.s. The french love to set people up so be prepared for speed-dating, a set up with a random date for casino night and une lettre d'amour (a letter written by something who likes you which is put in a 'postbox' and read out to everybody by the staff). :D

I went to ELC in Rosscrea last summer for 3 weeks, its a great laugh and you actually do pick up a lot of french. I would defo advise to do it.

Jesus, I was on your course!

ELC, you do learn alot. If you go to France, there's no garuntee you'll actually learn anything, the freedom is a pretty serious distraction. Friends of mine, who are smart motivated guys, learn very little :)

About six or seven from my german class went last summer and the improvement in there German is verynoticeable. Most of them now are amongst the best in the higher level class. They all said they had some great craic on the course too so i would definitely recommend it

Don't worry about the language, they don't let you speak English at all...so you'll either pick up French/German pretty quickly or develop selective mutism. I absolutely hated my course, there were too many people and the staff were horrible. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Have fun!

My guess is that you are talking about Clongowes Wood. There were way too many people on that course.

    Going to France > ELC

Exactly. Don't go there people. I think it's downfall is that the whole thing was established to make money, unlike spending a summer at a Gaeltacht, which started out of a love for the language.
