Registering new company - but don't know what I'm doing!

    Hi,

This is probably going to sound like a really dense question, but here goes.

I've recently registered a dotcom which I intend to develop into a site and maybe into something profitable in the future.

I think it might be good to maybe protect my interests in the domain and the site by registering the domain name (or similar) as a company too.

But there are so many different ways to register on the website that I'm really unsure what one to choose, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

Basically, I'm not planning on hiring staff or anything like that in the near future. The business name is not my real name or anything like that, so I think that I can't register as a sole trader (or can I?).

Can anyone help me make sense of it?

You can register a business name with the CRO (register RBN) for €20 which will give you the business name you want and allow you to also register the .ie version if its available. If you plan to trade etc but not hire staff and are on your own then yes you can register as a sole trader.

The following was taken from citizens information website. Should help you. Good luck with your new business.

Find out how to form a company and register your company for tax purposes. When you start a business you can register as a sole trader, a partnership or a limited company. The type of structure you choose depends on the kind of business you are carrying on, with whom you will be doing business and your attitude to risk. The type of business you decide to start up will determine your dealing with the Companies Registration Office and will also determine the nature of any memoranda and articles that will need to be drawn up. The Companies Registration Office (CRO) has information regarding the name you choose for your company. You can register and file your documents online with CRO usi

I wouldn't worry about rushing to secure your .ie domain. Only companies registered either as that name or trading as that name can take that domain name, so nobody's going to steal it from under your nose or anything.

I dunno about that bit of advice! What if someone registers the same business name as him and secures the .ie domain before he does? He'll be up the creek then.

You can get the .ie domain if your business name is related to that domain or you can justify why you should get it so other people could get it.
Also business names arent registered on a once off like a compnay name you can have loads of the same registered business name and people trading as it so any of them could get that same domain name.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to do a lot of reading and find out exactly what I need to do.
