I have an ultegra front mech.
when i am in 20th (top) gear the front mech rubs the outside part of the mech. i.e the mech needs to be further out / away from the frame.

my understanding is that I should be adjusting the outside screw by loosing it in order to make the mech move further out .. is that correct?

    Yes.

Don't over do it though, or you risk throwing your chain when you shift up to the big ring. Quarter turns are the best.

yes, but you might also need to tighten the cable to make it go further out - they usually spring in, but need cable tension to go out..

I'm going to give it a miss. In too bad a humour and smoking too heavily.

True, but I always knew even without the smokes and gearing issues I'd be an also ran in this one. Being mad as hell will be no use when I'm out the back.
