As a good few people on here from what i read are heading down to Connemara for next Sunday, it might be an idea to know who's doing what distance.

I'm doing the Half and hoping for 1 hr 45 or so. Weather looks like it will be good and best of luck to all, whatever distance you doing.

Running 26.2 miles then crawling 13.1...or something along those lines.

I'm doing the ultra. :)

Half for me - trying to better by 10 secs my 2005 time of 2:00.09 :(

Am doing the half.
I'd like to improve on last year's 1:36. The thing is, I can remember the wind was behind me last year so I'm not so sure I'll beat it.
On the positive side I've done 1:30 elsewhere so maybe...

Good luck everyone!

Hoping to do the full, if my shin heals. Keeping a buddy company, and he hopes to do it in 3:44. Else, I'll see you all at the top of the hell of the west, with my Boards singlet, handing out gels and shouts of encouragement!

I'm doing the full. Have PB'd in my last two races (Cupids Dash 10k and Ballycotton 10) so hoping to do likewise in Connemara. 3:19:59 would be great.Fingers crossed.

I'm really looking forward to it actually. Good luck to everyone doing it. People that run Ultras must be a bit mad.....:D

ok i may be mad but after 2 marathons last year (belfast and dublin) in hole two more this(longford and dublin) and several 10k and half, im thinking about doing the ultra in connemara next year (all going well) one think is dough i always always run with my radio/mp3 player to keep me company and mind off the running .. how seirous is the ban on mp3?? id love to try this distance but dont think 6hours and 39 miles is going to happen for me with out my distarction.. can anyone give me advie??
thank you

Oh they are serious. But why on earth can't you do without your mp3, especially when you have some of the world's loveliest scenery all around you? Try a long run without music - you might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.

Trust me, you'll be enjoying the experience far too much to need music.

Nialloooo (hope i got the right number of o's?) - i share your enthusiam on the ultra. maybe its naivety, i dont know, but i am also (dare i say it) thinking strongly about the 39.X miler next year. have done 1 marathon to date. doing two this year. not talking about winning - more like a 5 and half/ 6 hour job.

on the mp3 front - i am a firm advocate of the music in the ears, and thought i couldnt do without. however, i got on ok in connemara half (1 hr 32 mins time) and i reckon would get carried away with occasion/ scenery on doing full/ultra and would hope u would be same. on these days, the atmosphere can get u thru!!

on another note, i did see people with mp3 players, but it was a real exception to the rule. also - dont know if they were sanctioned for wearing same??

I've only once ever run with earphones on, and that was a training run. So far, 2 connemara ultras, 3 100km races and 6 24 hour races, amongst many others, without a second's music required. It's not that hard. There's plenty to keep your mind occupied in Connemara.

thanks all for the info, the funny thing is i dont have music on its usually some sport show at the wekends or comdey potcast or something just chatting in my ear to keep me company as the miles go by ... ill give a long run on sunday ago with out my headphone and ill see how i go.. thanks again ill keep you posted how i go

I hardly ever run with an mp3 player, but when I signed up for the Connemara Ultra in 2007 I thought I'd never be able to run 6 hours without music, so I did use one for that race.

In 2008 I did the ultra again (sucker for punishment, me), sans music this time because of the new rules.

Guess what, I hardly noticed the difference. After a while the pain emanating from my quads overwrote any other sensory input anyway.
