hi, i thankfully have a job and it looks < fingers crossed > as safe as a job is now for the next while at least, the thing is i have been in the position for over a year and had been planning to ask for a pay rise after one year before the financial world collapsed, As it stands i am working in a team of four, am the last to join but do the majority of the work as I came to the team with a lot of experience and took this job as a door into the company with a lower wage etc than my previous role. The question is , is it possible now to ask for a raise? or is this putting my neck on the block?

i had really intended to ask for a substantial raise but know too that it may be important to just keep the head down and get on with it, although at the same time i dont want to give the impression that i am happy with my lot as this too can be perceived negatively.

by the way, how do you ask for a raise? anyone ever done it?

Thanks in advance for your help!:)

the whole country is taking pay cuts .... personally wouldnt see it as a good idea to go looking for a rise.

thanks redpunto, i work in spain for an american company which pays half of what you would make in ireland for the same role so i already know about the pay cuts believe me, here paycuts arent so much of a problem as losing the job entirely!:D

why not? go for it. If you believe you are doing more than your employer would have reasonably expected of you when they hired you, and/or are doing more than others on your team you could ask your employer to review your role with a view to re-grading it to a higher level, or to promote you. Of course we're in a recession, and a lot of companies are introducing pay freezes, and some paycuts, but that doesn't mean that the normal promotion channels in every company are being shut down. They may be in yours, but no harm in asking. Just gather some hard facts to show your employer, in terms of targets exceeded etc.

thanks podger, any more ideas about how exactly to word or phrase it, id basically like to either change roles for a higher salary or at least maintain my current role with an increased salary. any ideas of the best ways to phrase it without sounding like you dont like the role you are in??

    really appreciate the input
