Light cracked - NCT? Repair cost?

I have the below crack on the front light on my 99 Opel Corsa.

    6034073

    6034073

    1. Is it gonna fail the NCT as a result of that?

    2. Is this a DIY job that I could fix myself with parts? If not, how much to get it replaced in a garage?

    Thanks

I'd think that would be an NCT fail, better get it replaced. Here's what you want: http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=74372&pk=e53d4

You could also try eBay, might be cheaper. You could fit it yourself, but you will need someone to adjust the aim - shouldn't cost much.

    Yes it will fail.

I'm sure you could do it your self. Cost i'd say you could get it from a scrap yard for under 15.

So if I go to the garage I'm looking at approx €80 parts charge and about an hours labour?

My car passed with a cracked rear lense, but it wasn't as badly cracked. I also used some lense repair tape which helped hide it - but don't think that will work on yours.

Supply the part to the garage yourself so that way they cannot rightup the parts cost which is usually what they do when they get the parts for you. It could be anything up to 30%.. I would stick the light in myself, 30 mins in and out! Very easy to do, why pay someone to do a simple thing like that?
If you know how to pop your bonnet, taking out a light will be a piece of cake:D

The link I posted was from www.micksgarage.ie, a garage might charge twice that for a headlight.

And how long would it take you, to focus the light afterwards.....without a light tester?

Is it really such a piece of cake? As soon as you suggested I might need to buy stuff to do it (other than the light casing) it became a very daunting task.

I also need to get my oil changed ... so was hoping maybe to kill two birds in one go.

Maybe I should pop into a one-man garage and I might get things done a bit cheaper?

DIY - it's the recession dude :pac:

You'll pick up a few tools cheap - check lidl + aldi, and you'll pay for them with the money saved on your first service

Should be no bother changing the headlamp - check out the breakers such as Traynors - should cost £15 or so as mentioned...

All you need is basic primitive tools to remove a headlamp...A philips screwdriver, possibly a allen key, you should probably have these basic tools lying about the house anyways. As for focusing the lamp, well you can try that yourself via the adjusting screws or get your mechanic to focus it for ya...Your still saving money doing the major work which in fact is simple work yourself.. You will learn a thing or two aswell so thats an added bonus.;)

Oil is pretty simple too but you would not be charged mad money for a rather simple 20 minute job from a mechanic. If your not afraid to get oil on your hands do it yourself.. Very easy

It will definately fail the NCT.

You are bound to get a second hand one from a scrapped Corsa in a breaker's yard. They may even fit it for you for a few extra quid if you ask them nicely. Once fitted you will then need to get your headlights adjusted for the NCT. Some place like Advanced Pitstop will do this for you.
