Which AA1 have you (most importantly what OS).

What modem dongle from mobile company or you connecting with?

If you have a Linux based AA1 and e220 hauwei modem you may be able to get it to work by unlocking some hidden features of the default OS. see here

And using the package manager to get additional packages that will allow you to use the dongle.

Alternatively replace the linux OS that comes installed with it and install alternative linux based OS. Like eeebuntu or easypeasy.

e220 hauwei should work in these! Test a live usb stick first!

If you got an XP based version, something wrong with the dongle or you need to get additional software or maybe even have to flash the firmware on your dongle.

    Regards,
    J.

Hi the AA1 model number is zg5 running on Linux (linpus). The dongle is a Huawei E220 (Vodafone).

I'm not at all technically minded so simple instructions would be really appreciated :)

The version of linux install on the acer one is heavily stripped down version and as such getting the your dongle to work with it, is not an easy process. I link to one guide in my previous post on how to unlock some of the hidden features. Which should get you on a right track. After you have done that.

search for "Vodafone hauwei driver for linux" in your favorite search engine.
Download a ".rpm" version. Transfer it onto to your AA1.

It may or may not work!

I have an acer aspire one myself, and the e220 dongle. Rather than go down above road, i replaced the default OS the day i bought it.

    Alternative instructions:

    1. Go out to a good newsagent tomorrow!
    2. Go to the computer magazine section!
    3. Look for Linux mags.
    4. Choose one with a DVD.
    5. Buy it!
    6. Read and learn!
    7. If you got yourself one with Knoppix!
    8. While your out shopping also buy a USB stick.
    9. Hopefully you have another PC at home? * (see note bellow)
    10. Folllow the instructions in the Mag too run the DVD.
    11. Find the option in the live DVD now running to create a live USB boot stick!
    12. Stick the USB stick in your AA1 attached your dongle.
    13. Turn on and press F12 on your AA1 and select your USB stick.
    14. If it's not there (press ctrl-alt-del). Press F12 again! still not there? Go back to step 10.
    15. ....... now you have a system that works with the dongle!
    16. ....... search for guides on how to use this system.

(if not go into an internet cafe, get a terminal that you can stick the DVD into and boot from, ask first, you maybe able to buy a USB stick in there.)

You could also get a USB image (netbook-remix) directly from ubuntu.
