Free To Air Vs FreeSat Vs Sky in terms of Value

    Hello,

    I'm interested in getting a basic satellite system (probably with dual LNB) put in for my dad. I know a bit about the different options, was going down the free to air/freesat route but then it occured to me that if he got a basic sky installation €50 for installation, €240 for the year - (half of €75 the sign up bonus if I could find someone that wanted to do this) it might work out cheaper.

    What I'm wondering is how the Sky system compares to a free to air/freesat set up when the 12 month contract is up (I believe you get to keep the dish and box).

    Doing it the sky way he could get the Irish channels and some extra pack for the year, pssobly then by the time the year was up the Irish channels might be available through DTT?

    There are probably downsides, perhaps you might let me know?

    I believe freesat offers superior funcionality and EPG to free to air, and a few HD channels, are these the main advantages?

    I know an Aldi set up would be cheapest, but I'm not going to be installing this myself so what would the cheapest optin be?

    Thanks in advance

    I subscribed to Sky on the basis that the year's contract with free box was about the same price as a box.

    Unfortunately, the crappy EPG - in particular its stupid restrictions (no "delete crap and unused channels" and the ridiculous "Other channels" restrictions - will probably mean that I'll still need to buy a decent box once the year is up.

    So yeah, it's a free box and it's roughly the same price and gives you one or two extra decent channels for a year, but I wouldn't rely on the box being any use once you kill the Sky sub.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Sky sounds less appealing then.

    What are the main pluses of Freesat over FTA.

    Are there many channels missing from Freesat that are available on FTA?

    Thanks

    freesat has:
    * 7-day EPG
    * Autosorting channels
    * Autotuning (new or moved channels)
    * 'red button' interactive services, including sport multiscreen
    * OTA software updates
    * USB/Ethernet ports for future use
    * Regional support
    * Non-freesat FTA channels also available (via menu option)

    freesat+ (humax Foxsat HDR) has:
    * pause/rewind live tv
    * Record from EPG
    * Series link (record whole series)
    * Alternative support (suggest HD or scheduled alternative)
