Rounds Sparred Before a Fight ???

Wondering if any of you can answer this please ?

Before some fights you hear coaches/trainers saying their fighters have sparred "Over 100 rounds" in training (I think I heard this again recently in the build up to the Khan Barrerra fight) my question is:

If you are training for 12 weeks for a 12 round fight surely you would need to spar more than 100 rounds ?

100 rounds of sparring over 12 weeks works out at just over 8 rounds a week ???

Usually, the camp is an 8-10 week intense camp. Now, that would be 6, maybe 7 days a week and I would say that sparring would be three times in that week with a week off before the bout. That's close to the norm.

So, say 7 weeks of sparing at 2-3 times a week with maybe 8 rds per session.
That adds up to over 100. Factor in all the pad work and road work
and conditioning training. It's a hell of a lot and also,
they can't over do the sparring; it is the most intensive of all and poses the greater injury risks

Thats crazy, you cant be fight sharp without sparring..

i think sparring should be done at least every other day and i'd say anywhere from 5-10 rounds! that would be 15-30 rounds a week and over 6 weeks thats 90-180 rounds..

i dont think they count rounds and just make up figures to sound good!

Carl Froch had apparently 110 rounds before Pascal but I'd say in around 100 for World title fights or 12 rounders

Cheers - the 100+ rounds makes a bit more sense. As for enzo hahaha he must have replaced his sparring with with the keg lifting I seen him do in the build up. Good Idea.

Its explosive power training, all the pro's do this or versions of it, this stuff is why he has power, seperate issue to sparring which he should of been doing aswell, i'd say he was sparring and was just acting like he did not need to spar!

if he did not spar he needs to look at enzo calzaghe and reconsider his trainer..

Hate to state the obvious post fight but he seemed to have overcooked that department and it sapped his strength

    How's that obvious?
his strenght seemed fine, just his opponent had a great chin, just because people seen 1 clip of him doing this type of training does not mean he done lots of it anyway!

Well, for a lad who didn't spar, he sure looked fit. He went 8 solid hard rds throwing shots and IMO, that needs some amount of sparring. No matter how much pads, exercise, skips, miles ran etc, nothing will allow you that much competitive punching. Sparring gives you the extra bit to be able to throw leather. Remember, Enzo was throwing power shots throughout, got caught, and KO'd.

I would say he sparred, just not as much as he should have maybe!

Either Afolabi is made of granite or Enzo's power wasnt really there on the night. Fair enough Afolabi has a good chin but beyond round 3 Enzo never seriously hurt him. This dude normally knocks people out for fun (granted quality of opponent as usual is questionable)... Overall IMO a combo of lack of rounds sparred and his strength was short of usual...

Also FFS how can a dude of his size train with little Enzo... I'd be afraid to hit little Enzo in case I hurt him!! :)

Knowing how to hold the pads is the key, im only 5,6 and 3/4! only messing! and have no bother doing pads with big heavy lads, i know others that could not hold them for a kid as they dont understand the skill in using pads, it really is a skill of its own..

Michael Kelly - "“I have sparred over 90 rounds for the fight so I'm in the best shape I could be in for this one. Although this is only a four round fight I have trained hard and I’m looking to get stoppage number two under my belt."
