I recently let my 6 year old nephew mess about in my car and he somehow managed to put a small crack in the idrive screen in my BMW 520. Before i go get a quote to fix it, does anyone have an idea how much this would cost?

I'd say that you cannot get the screen as a separate unit. My guess would be the full unit will have to be replaced.

See that barrel over there? Prepare to be bent over it.:D

An arm , a leg your liver and a kidney should just about cover it.

I have no idea if these are repairable or not, but if anyone can fix them then Donal Connolly can:

Depending on your year, and model you should be able to find it on http://www.bmwfans.info heres a quick random search i did and came up with this http://bmwfans.info/original/E60/Lim/520d-M47N2/ECE/R/N/2007/01/mg-65/ill-65_1352/ these prices are cost to dealers i think. you'll need to add the above mentioned arm and leg to the price ;)

I'd be thinking eBay for that one.

There are companies in the UK breaking e60 5 Series:

    Try:

    Quarry Motors

    FAB

    LK Spares BMW

    http://www.bmw-carparts.co.uk/

Call them rather than e-mail. You could always get the dealer to fit the screen you get.

I've dealt with Quarry before, they are pretty helpful. As rebel.ranter says, definitely ring as their websites are rarely up to date.

Thanks for all the "optomistic" replies guys! :D

Seriously though, as its only a small crack in the corner of the screen and i'd like to keep all my internal organs, i'll hold off for a while!!!

That's the only problem with BMW, great cars but a fortune to repair the smallest thing!

a few years ago I priced a replacement LCD panel on a Volvo T5 and I was quoted in the region of about €2K from any of the Volvo main dealers. It was a car I was thinking of buying and wanted the cost of replacing the panel before I made a decision.

Breakers or Ebay is the way to go !!

there cheap as chips on ebay, and so easy to install. quite literally only 2 torx screws need to be worked on to do the job

there are loads out there as people are changing over to the wider, pro sat nav screens all the time, me included!

It might seem harsh, but trade the child in for a new screen - he'll thank you for it later.

A temporary solution is to buy one of those screen protector things (kinda sticky plastic stuff) that you'd put on an ipod etc - it would prevent the crack getting bigger in the meantime.
