I recently got a new used car on which the tax runs out at the end of the month. The tax book has been changed over so it should be fine in that respect and I have the new one in my name So what do I do now ? I tried to renew online, but I dont think I have the necessary reference number yet. Will the tax office send me out a form with the necessary reference number ? or do I have to chase it up myself.

Your change of ownership will have been too late to receive the RF100B (which has the PIN on it). You could try ringing Shannon to see if they'll issue you a new one but you'll more than likely have to call into your local county council offices. I had to do exactly the same myself this morning...

I send in the old tax book in late feb, still too late i guess ?

The RF100B is generated at the end of the month preceding expiration so it was probably too late by the time they processed the change.

You should be able to send in the form and payment by post but I've never done myself as the motor tax office is only a 15 minute walk from my office.

Quick spin to the tax office solved this one. Gotta hate having the queue for the privalige of paying tax. Not to mention the fact im paying 4x the tax that somebody with the same 2.0 diesel engine but newer car pays.

Edit: Thanks for the advice, saved me waiting for the stupid form that wouldnt have come, and then franticly driving off to the tax office during lunch break a day after its expired.

You could have just rung Shannon as others suggested. I did when I got my car and they sent me a pin through the post.
