    Hi all,

Would anybody know where to get an engagement ring resized in Dublin

We have been to one or two jewellers but they seem to send it to someone else to get resized.

So id like to go straight to the shop who do it and find out how much and is it difficult

    thanks again

I got mine resized (smaller) in the shop where my husband bought it if that helps? We were not charged for it but then again we bought more stuff there afterwards. Was without my ring for less than a week.

We got mine in Fields in Grafton St, but I needed it smaller. They have their own goldsmiths workshop in the Henry Street store, so we just walked down there ourselves and dropped it in, saved us about two days waiting with the way the deliveries worked out to the shops. We left mine in the week before Christmas and I got it back on Christmas eve. Apparently it usually takes about a week, but because it was Christmas, mine was 10 days.

We didn't have to pay anything, because we'd bought the ring there. I'm not sure how much they charge to have it done if it was bought elsewhere. It's fairly straightforward to resize it AFAIK. The majority of people I know who are engaged/married had their rings resized to a certain degree. Just make sure to try on a good few of the sizer rings to get the size that's perfect.

the reason they want to send it out could be because by making the size bigger/smaller it affects teh setting, so it is not a simple matter of adding/removing a bit of metal, but more complicated meaning the stones need to be reset. Also if you didin't buy the ring in the jewwellers they sometimes are wary of altering the ring for the above reasons.

Also think of this - you buy your ring abroad for next to nothing, then come into a shop in Dublin and want them to carry out a lot of work on a ring which wasn't bought from them! they usually charge more than usual in these cases. I'm not saying you bought hte ring abroad or anything, but my friend works in ajewellers and said while she understnads people wanting to save a few quid, some people come in gloating and rubbing their noses in it about what they saved by buying in NY or where ever, but then expect the Irish jeweller to reset the ring for next to nothing! in these cases the jeweller rarely does the job cheap unless it is a simple add/remove a piece. anything more intricate and they charge as much as possible!

Try Michael Perry in the Powerscourt SC. He does everything in-house. His workshop is right beside the counter.

But isn't this what a jeweller should be able to do?

I know what you mean but the point I was making is that not all rings CAN be resized whilst maintaining the design. If the ring needs to be reset, some jewellers are unwilling to do this is they did not sell the original ring. The reason being if the customer is unhappy with the way its reset then they will cause murder! the jewleler get s the blame! the original jeweller wont take back the ring as its been altered, and the jeweller who reset the ring obviously doesn't want to take it off the customers hands. As I said a friend works in a jewellers and she said that a most times that a ring is taken in to be resized when it was boguth elsewhere and needs resetting it is never straight forward with the customer so isn't really worth the trouble.

The problem is that some jewellers (especially if you buy abroad) don't advise you that the setting of the ring makes it difficult to resize so the buyer comes back thinking that the ring can be resized, but sometimes to do this the actual style of setting needs to be changed and then they are really disappointed. Not all jewellers are honest about this and then the customer gets annoyed with the jeweller who carried out the resetting.

I recieved a jewelley set from my Fiance that came from Istanbul. I was thrilled as it contained a necklace, braclet, earrings and most importantly my engagement ring!! I looked at the ring and discovered I had a HUGE problem as it was 7 YES 7 sizes too BIG!!! actually 7 1/2 sizes too big!! I knew I would have severe trouble as the ring had to be resized from size Q to i 1/2.

To add even more complications the ring is very intricate with 8 flowers and 13 tiny diamonds.

I talked to 5 Goldsmiths in Dublin and explained my problem and the fun started....

This is very important ladies as I cannot emphasise enough how freaked out I was that the ring would need to be returned.

1st goldsmith looked at it and said it's impossible to resize the ring down 7 sizes the stones will pop out and need to be reset and we can never guarantee in future the stones will stay put after resetting them.

2nd Goldsmith on Fade steet said it can be done but the stones will pop out as the ring is resized down it will be a huge risk to the ring.

3rd Goldsmith (Rocks on graffon) said the ring will end up an oval shape

4th Goldsmith (small place on Dawson) said the ring will snap in half if I touch it as it needs to come down 7 sizes.

5th Goldsmith said NO PROBLEM!! Easy!! come back for it in two hours he had it done perfectly at a cost of forty euros. The ring is still a perfect cirlce no marks where it was resized and fits like a dream!!!

The genius GOLDSMITH is on Dawson street in Dawson street jewellers(Big place does watch repairs) please please go there if you need your ring resized as he is just brilliant and very fast. The people that work there are extremely helpful and very matter of fact about what they can do.

I am the happiest girl in the world right now :-)

My ring is 18k white and yellow gold 8 flowers and 13 tiny diamond as I say a very intricate ring and a difficult job as usually a ring can only be resized down about 2 sizes this was 7 sizes no stones popped out no lines where it
was cut he is a genius goldsmith..

I really hope this helps other women....
