Finally a Job Interview - Need to be Self Employed

So after 2.5 months of applying for jobs I've finally got two interviews next week. Both of them are for short term contract of about 2 months but the stipulation is that if I get either job that I register as self employed for the duration of the contract.

Now, I hear that you pay a different class of PRSI (S) and that Jobseekers Benefit is not one of the things it covers! So I'm just wondering given the way the jobs front is going, and it really can only get worse over the net 2 years, is it worth becoming self employed for a 2/3month contract and losing the possible ability to get jobseekers benefit in the future?

IMHO, absolutely not. (I started to consider the same thing, but ended up not being selected for the contracts, so it wasn't an issue).

Some companies are needing to do things like to this to get around hiring freezes. See if there's some way that an agency company (eg Multi-flex) can contract you to the employer, and the agency employs you.

You don't pay prsi when you're unemployed either though. And you should find it easier to get a job after working for two months, than after being out of work for 2.5.

Hiya, a company like http://www.cxc.ie/ can do all this for you and you will not have to register as a sole trader, be it for short term or long term. I know people that have dealt with them and they were very good.

you don't pay prsi but your stamps are done for you

for example, I don't qualify for the dole (not enough stamps), but I have to sign on every month anyway just to make sure I get my prsi stamps.

the self employed thing is grand in yer qualifily year you need stamps

at the moment its 2007 so in that year you need 39 stamps
self emp stamps don't count towards the non-means tested job seekers so if you don't have 39 stamps this year either from employment or from signing on ypu wont be entitled to non means tested job seekers in 2011

the reason they want you to be a subbie (self emp sub contractor) is to get around issues like employer prsi redundency and holiday entitlements and hiring and union issues its an opportunity as far as i'm concerned

i regard it as a no - brainer and would be far moree likley to employ some one who did than someone who didn't

if the sh1t hits the fan and there are no opportunities for you in 2011 then there will be no no-means tested dole anyway
