How long are you planning on staying out ?

Well - in Km, we'd be aiming at a century +

    I'm in

Will try .. but legs still sore from the climb to Kippure yesterday .. Niceonetom is a bad influence ... here we were just finished climbing Devil's elbow when I hear .. anyone for Kippure ... and I lost control of my mouth for a few secs due to lack of oxygen supply to brain and out popped ... "sure, why not" ..

Also, Connemarathon on Sunday ... must save legs ...

    In, like flynn, ftw.

    Joe Bastardi, he say :

    11° C
    Partly Sunny

    Wind:

    superforecast_uk_ireland34.png

So we should get a little tailwind al the way home :)

I was out yesterday in similar conditions, and it was bloody lovely.

    Good luck with that!

So far we have we're 4. Kippure is a b*tch but feels good when you're up there :)and god knows it takes me hours to get up there :P

If you do come out people, bring food as I am not sure if many places will be open on a BH.

Not sure what I'll be doing tomorrow yet, but one thing I won't be doing is going up Kippure. Broke my left shifter last night, so I'm left with a 53t front ring and no trim. Expensive mistake to make.

    How did you break it?

Big ring Kippure ya nancy! Do it!

    ...

    Capagnolo rubbish. Pfft.

    ...

Wow, hard luck Tonto. Would you still be able to race with it? Or is it too lumpy a course?

Would you not be tempted to move the running gear over from the cinelli until you get the campy stuff sorted? I know shimano equipment burns your skin like acid, but if you wear gloves you might be ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

I think there is a sign at the bottom of the Kippure road that says "Big ring only, please". If there isn't, then there should be.

I reckon you could do tomorrow's race course in the big ring, there is only one hill of any note and you could power up it.

Dumb accident. Let the bike fall against a patio chair.

I thought about that, but would mean a whole load of work for a temporary fix.

I reckon I could alright, as long as I don't mind the chain rub on the front mech. Right now though I'm so ticked off I feel like tossing the bike over the balcony.

that was great .. the cat ones move at some speed. I had no computer but apparently the peleton was doing 60kph plus on the trim road. I was in a compact and was nearly spinning out in 50/12 my biggest gear.
I felt fine all day but got dropped before the"big" hill the second time round. Silly me hanging round the back of the peleton
i think it is a confidence thing. I made up ground on the "big" hill but didnt manage to catch the tail.
Ended up coming home in a little gruppetto.

    i'd do it again tomorrow...

probably be dropped earlier tho ...:)

I've been stuck in doors all day ...STONE COLD SOBER as well I might add.

Looks like top weather for a race/spin/drinking outside.

How'd everyone else get on in the race?

You were flying up the hills at the weekend barrabus so not surprised you were making up ground on them today. Speed sounds savage though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

I had a bit of a 'mare today. My new wheels (yay) seem to acheived some of their light weight by having the shittest-rimtape-in-the-world-evar. I got my first puncture rolling into Dundrum, second one at the top of the Sally, third on the way down Kippure... the fourth, well I think you can see where this is going...

So, 6 (or 7?) tubes later, and thanks to some McGyver-esque lateral thinking at the sally gap crossroads I got back home. Got my century for the day. Got up Kippure. I even got some sun, so I can't really complain too much, I suppose. I was feeling a bit unreasonable at times today though. Fucking bastarding wheels.

BIG thanks to emty who seriously lived up to his rep as a gentleman, and a cool head in a sticky situation. I would have thrown the bike in a ditch with out him there.

So... how many tubes do I owe, and to whom? :o I owe tubes and pints all over the place I think.

Sean Bracken of the Usher Irish Road Club finally made it to the winner’s enclosure this morning after 25 years of attempting to win the Patrick’s Day event.

    bracken-wins-09.jpg
Along with Ger Madden of Team Sport Med and Paul Dolan also of Usher they went clear of a group 16 towards the end of a 40 mile event held in the Dunboyne area. They held on by 15 seconds to make it across the line.

Admittedly Bracken’s handicapped of eight minutes on the scratch group played a significant role in his success. Fastest in the event which had a record turn out of 215 was Philip Lavery of Winning Solutions.

Not quite as bad as Toms, but my spin consisted of eating pancakes and drinking coffee watching JeffOnTour finally realise that his right shifter wasn't working because the cable head was lost inside the shifter. After figuring out why, a trip to the bike shop ensued. A second trip ensued when he realised that he was given the wrong cable. The shifter had to be taken apart to get the last bit of cable out. We are experts now. Some four hours later we finally got out for a swift 40 minute spin. A trip up Howth had to be thrown in at the end.

    104 km.
Edmonstownb Rd, Glen Cree, Sally Gap, Kippure and home via Brittas. I am quite pleased with myself and today I have accomplihsed my 1st Millenium (1000km) of the year, just a month and a half after coming from 2 fractures. The view from kippure was great today!

Got spotted a few times by a few people, going ' Ye Bordsies! Love the Jersey!'

We also met Tails at the Sally Gap crossroad.

    Happy Paddys y'all :)

We were wondering what happened to ye...figured it had to be something verging on the terminal. We waited about thirty minutes in Laragh before pushing back into the city via Calary and Enniskerry.

Good to know Tom and the rest made it home safe in the end and even managed to have some fun! Your right about the road to Laragh, twas very nice.

Realised when I got home this afternoon that I had done my first century, so I was very happy with myself!

Great day for a cycle. Was out for a picnic to Glendalogh with the family. Huge amoun of cyclists out - although mostly saw elderly men on bikes driving up Sally Gap and later Wicklow Gap.
Hope that when I am that age that I still have wherewithall to push the pedals of my bike up a steep climb.
Pictures look great, emty, as always.

Hope that this little summer for past few days is not a repeat of March/April for last 2 years followed by the June-Aug that we got in both years.

You took pictures on the way up to Kippure emty?

Did 78km in total today, happy enough with that. Got my first boards spin in (by accident) and was my first time up Kippure too. Nice to meet whoever I did meet and whoever's name I can remember(!).

Some day out today, great day for a spin.

62km around Oahu in Hawaii. Not sunny, but very warm

Roads are absolutely horrible for cycling on. Think M50 with moving traffic and no hard shoulder

I got these - was a bit of an impulse purchase if I'm honest. I went into cycleogical to buy a spoke and came out with wheels. It was the 1430g decals that did me in I think. Got a fair price too, and they do look good in real life - chromey polished rimes with black spokes and hubs. They are immediately better than the rubbish they're replacing (stiffer anyway - we'll see how they fare on Irish roads), and they're nearly 500g lighter than my shimanos. Hard to feel the love for them after yesterday though.

Very nearly did throw in the towel. A defunct tube, cut open and split down the middle did eventually serve as rim tape - it's more of a fiddle to do than you'd think - but I got from the sally gap crossroads all the way home without further incident.

We? I seem to remember that as I began my open cog surgery you left the room muttering about Shimano not wanting us to open the shifters up . :D

Great to have the machine finally on the road though. Ridiculously light, takes a bit of getting used to but I don't think it's a bad complaint to have.

Luckily the Island is quite small so it's hard to get lost. You really appreciate the Wicklow backroads when you hit a place like this with no small roads.

In other semi related news, the Americans are a bit nuts with the aul St. Patricks day. Everyone wears green and claims that they are Irish ! Bleedin pretenders
