not low budget or produced by a small studio, definitely a product of the hollywood machine, so no

Depends on your definition of Indy.

You can win your bet by pointing out that none of the major studios produced the film and that it was distributed by a independent label in the uk

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Home_Video

and carolco who produced the film are an independent production company http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolco_Pictures

Terminator 1 is Indy though, It was distributed by Orion which was at the time an independent company that broke away from Warner, it was produced by Hemdale who are independent.

    But

By the time of Terminator 2 Cameron making a film was like selling a DS, it prints money so you cant really consider him Indy but rather a giant of the industry much like Lucas. Technically all six star wars films are independent.

But in reality Lucas is as much of a part of the studios as Warner or Fox.

well according to wiki and imdb it wasnt nominated for a spirit award

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103064/awards

But the pure term on if something is Indy or not is checking to see if the *big six* major studios are involved or not.

If its only their indie division involved (i.e Fox Searchlight, seeing the trouble Juno got on here with people accusing it of faking indie) it means that the film was sold to the major studio in the majority of cases after production and that the fox searchlight label is used for distribution only.

I don't remember him being in it, that's for sure and I certainly don't think the whip would have had any effect on the T-1000.

Edward Furlong has never won an independent spirit award - he was nominated for American Heart but didn't win.

Given the fact that the budget for T2 was $100 million which made it, at the time, the most expensive movie ever made you'd have a hard time passing it off as an independent movie.

Just because a film has special effects, doesn't eliminate if from being an indie film.

Lord of the Rings, Donnie Darko and Pan's Labyrinth are all independent films that rely on special effects to help tell the story.

    • Raiders of the Lost Ark
    • Temple of Doom
    • Last Crusade
    • Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
    • Judgement Day

    Hope this helps.

How is Lord of the rings an independent film? It had major studio backing from the get go, first from Miramax and then New Line [one owned by Disney and the other by Time Warner]. Independent films tend to be films that are made for shoestring budgets without major studio backing and try to sell themselves at film festivals. Lord of the rings had a studio backing it before they started shooting. The production company may have been independent and the the film made away from the hollywood machine but that doesn't make in independent. Kubrick made all his films well away from the hollywood machine but always had major studio backing before single frame had been shot.

Too late, at least do it in the five minutes after mine and share some of the Internet glory. Anyway, the OP spelled Terminator wrong so this thread is an instant fail.

The Star Wars prequels are all Indie films.

    *technically*

You cant really be indie if your company owns excessive amounts of the industries leading production facilities.

    Very true.
But by virtue of the fact they were self funded (in a matter of speaking) they are indie! ;)

    Lucas is the antichrist tho

ever watch that documentary on the star wars dvd box set (Empire of Dreams or something) it gets pretty cringeworthy at the end when they start going on about Lucas being an independent.

I think you will find that both are acceptable, but a discussion on the acceptability of an adverb or an adjective in a sentence about Indiana Jones being involved in Terminator 2 has no relevance in this thread.

I know, he is put a pedastel that is undeserving IMO. Dont get me wrong, I love Star Wars and Empire and as a child I lived for Star Wars. (I have an original Emperor G1 figure on my desk in work!) Lucas had an imagination that he could bring to life, thats not up for arguing. BUT as a film maker, he sucks. When he was trying to make SW and his film buddies (bar Spielberg) told him it would suck, and even when making it, the more "professional" of crew and cast were mocking and laughing at him yet he kept going. Thats quite inspiring to those who want to get into film.

But lets be honest. Empire was great thanks to Kershner. Jedi wasnt so great but Lucas didnt direct it anyway. The 3 prequels sucked something awful.

So you begin to question Lucas's film making abilities. THX1138 was average and personally i wasnt a fan of American Grafitti.
