Tax & Insurance Questions

Are you able to get insurance on a car that hasn't been registered in your name? I have a car that has no tax or insurance on it at present and my sister wants to use it. I don't want to sell it/transfer ownership so it would be good if she could get her own insurance on it.

Then, presuming she can get insurance in her name, I guess it is easy to tax the car even though the vehicle registration isn't in her name?

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

    Yes and no.

I bought my parents car, never changed ownership and had insurance for a few years before eventually changing over and it was all above ground.

However I know my brother bought a car but the insurance tried to dodge the claim when he crashed as it was actually my mother that had paid for the car. Eventually they did pay but it took a bit of arguing.

Besides I might be wrong but wasnt there a case where the Judge decided that once you pay and are accepted the insurance company must honour the claim regardless of any porkies you may have told? I tremember hearing something along those lines, think it was involving a first provisional driver unaccompanied.

She can get it insured. The car does not have to be in her name.

But she can not get it taxed in her name as the car must be registered to her to do so.

She could get it taxed in your name. You wont have to do anything she can go into the tax office herself and say 'I'm hear to get a tax disc for my brother' simple as.

Although it would be easier to sigh the car over to her. Thats what id do anyway.:)
