Im training for the Great Ireland 10k run in the Phoenix Park in April. Training is going well but I have been experiencing pins and needles in one of my feet when out training. Does anyone have any advice on whats causing it or how do I prevent it?

One way or the other it's bad blood circulation. Possibly laces too tight. In my experience it's not particularly pleasant but you can generally run through it.

But I too would be interested in a definitive answer.

I get this too, usually about 6k into a run. From some googling I did before it apparently is caused by the muscle in the calf swelling and because it is contained inside a sheath the pressure on either the blood vessels passing through or on the nerves causes the sensation. Either way it sucks;-)

I find it goes away as I gradually increase the distances I run and consequent fitness (had an enforced lay-off due to an unknown (to the quack!!) virus for 3 months and am only just building distance again).

Hope this helps. I was quite concerned about it the first time it happened to me.

Used to happen to me like clockwork after 40-45 minutes running nearly independent of effort, terrain or speed. Right foot would gradually go numb and regain sensation over the next mile or two. Went on all the first half of last year but I haven't noticed it happening in a while. No idea what caused it but the above theories sound credible.
