An Iraqi football player has been shot dead by a spectator as he was about to score an equalising goal.

The shooting happened in the last minute of a game between two local rivals on Sunday, police say.

The striker was shot in the head during the match in the city of Hilla, according to local security officials.

The game was being played between Sinjar and Buhayra. The suspected killer has been arrested as police carry out an investigation.

Imagine what would happen if that sort of thing happened in a big european league, but since its Iraq I guess nobody will be too surprised

Just saw this on a news site.......lol ever been tempted

An Iraqi football player was shot dead by a rival fan as he was about to score an equaliser.

The striker from the Buhairat amateur team had only the goalkeeper to beat in the match yesterday near Baghdad when a supporter of the rival Sinjar club shot him in the head in the final minute of play.

Sinjar were leading 1-0 when the shooting occurred. Police said a spectator was arrested.

More Iraqis are turning out for sports events now that security is improving. Major matches in Baghdad are heavily guarded but security in amateur games in smaller cities is often lax.

Ooops sorryf or the double post !

that is weird. I read yesterday that the Sinjar keeper was shot by a police officer celebrating the teams 2-1 (not deliberately)
