What are peoples thoughts on the X-Type?

Don't really know much about cars as I ride a bike myself and my wife has a '98 Almera that we both use.

The Almera is getting a bit long in the tooth so we're talking about changing. She has her heart on a 118d but she always wanted a Jag also. I'm doing a bit of research on the sly before saying anything.

So I've been looking at a few X-Types. Seem reasonable enough. If I'm doing my math correctly on a 2006 2.0L Diesel "S" model, the VRT is around €3500 and the tax is around €302 a year if I bring the car in from the North or UK.

So what are they like as a car? Decent enough? How are Jaguar reliability wise and do they cost a bomb to service?

    Cheers.....

They're essentially Mondeos, so they should be grand.

The car wont be taxed on the co2 system unless it was first registered in 2008 or after so a 2006 one would be taxed on the old engine capacity system.

Pre January 2008 cars are taxed on CC not emissions, road tax will be €614.

Big thread on x types already exists. I think the consensus is in general positive.

p.s On an 06 the road tax is c.c. based, not emissions.

just found that big thread, thanks.

So I had the VRT thing arseways? Cars from outside Ireland must be first registered in their own country after the 1st Jan 2008 to qualify for the emmissions based VRT and Tax in Ireland, correct?

I thought it was any cars registered in Ireland after the 1st July 2008. Crap....

Yes but the VRT rate is based on emissions for all cars, road tax is CC on pre January 2008.

They're a fine car as long as you are not expecting a Jag, because they simply are not.

Your vrt will be as per emissions on uk registartion cert and the tax will 600+ because it older than 08.

Consider buying a Mondeo as that's what the X type is as already mentioned. After the Almera it seem like a Roller (nothing wrong with N15 Almeras by the way) but I suspect your missus wants a bit of flash, personally if I was in the market for an upmarket diesel I concentrate on resale value first - not too great on an X type. Also darn all main dealers about for parts & repairs.

I drive one and I like it but I'm kinda middle aged. I can't compare it to a Mondeo cause I never drove one (but maybe there's people who have driven neither that will). They are very spacious and drive well My one is an 01 have had no major problems with it just the annual service. Very Heavy on Juice is the only thing I find very comfortable to drive.

Plenty of Ford garages, it's a Ford engine.

    Edit: It's also much cheaper.

I should have known somebody would say that without thinking first. There are many specific parts to the Jag that do not apply to the Ford.

It's where I get mine serviced. Works fine for me ;)

We all know the chassis, running gear, a lot of the electrics are directly from a Mondeo, no harm in that as it makes a Jag a better Jag.

Sure for generally servicing a Ford dealer is fine and of course one would expect it to be cheaper.

But I'm sure your friendly Ford dealer will not stock lights, body parts, interior trim & fittings, shocks & springs etc,etc your Jag.

You must be in and out of the garage so, if they keep breaking...

They may not stock them, but they can get get them.

They can't get them as Ford no longer ownes Jag! Did you not know that?

I like them, the styling while not contemporary is elegant and looks special. My only gripe is that they are a bit tight for space and headroom is not great, so not a great family car. But find a nice 2.0 diesel in SE spec cheap and you could overlook that.

I've had one for the past two years having previously owned two mondeo's, they are similiar cars but overall i would rate the jag better. The jag has the 130bhp engine where as most but not all mondeo's have less powerful engines. It is also more responsive and handles better on back roads, not sure but possibly has a sportier suspension than a mondeo.
I would say go for it, i imported mine from the UK for the same price as a mondeo of the same year was for sale in Ireland. Servicing and general maintenance is not expensive, the same as any similiar size diesel saloon, mondeo, vectra etc..
One of the reasons i bought mine was because i like the way it looked and at the time they were relatively rare on irish roads although they are getting very cheap now and are much more common.

    Don't be utterly stupid.

If you look, Bolands and Drive are the only Jag dealers connect to a Ford dealership.

Drive no longer sell Jaguars, so its only Bolands who are both Ford and Jaguar. So that kinda puts that argument out the window unless your based in the south east.

As for the car itself, they are a nice car, if not a little old at this stage. Nice to drive, look nice.

For a second hand car, i'd have one over a 118d anyday.

I like the X-Type too, its a little different and a bit on the rare side, good value on them second hand.

Boot and rear leg room is a bit tight though but the estate is available if you need some extra practicality.
