    Dublin Bus management has agreed to amend its cost cutting plan following talks today.

    SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union met again with the company this morning to clarify and resolve a number of outstanding issues.

    The agreement ensures there will be no compulsory redundancies and all drivers will be guaranteed at least five days pay a week.

    After intensive negotiations at the Labour Relations Commission a rationalisation plan was agreed, which avoids the mass sacking of 160 new, probationary drivers.

    The unions will ballot their members on the proposals next week and information meetings are planned for 18 March.

    In the meantime, there will be no industrial action by workers or moves to dismiss probationary drivers at the company.

    The document is too vague and makes changes that just are not acceptable it is a typical leave it to the last minute rush job.

    For example at the moment we have a very fair system of administering overtime and rest days. The lists moves around and everyone gets a fair shake no matter how senior or junior or how well you get on with a particular depot inspector.

    Under the proposal from the LRC it leaves it pretty much up to the depot inspector to decide who gets what and this leaves the system wide open to abuse and cronyism.

    The standby system proposed by the LRC won't work.

    Bank holiday system again open to abuse up to inspector.

    Thats without getting into route blocking and the loss of shift pay in future on Bogeys etc etc etc


    I would be shocked if this passed a ballot

    One of the interesting and less understood aspects of the "Operational" end of Public Transport is the actual means by which a Bus and Driver end up at your Bus Terminus at a set time each day.

    With an operational fleet of some 1180 vehicles operating over a 20 hour timeframe,364 days a year utilizing some 2,800 drivers whose working and driving timeframes are legally limited in several different areas the ACTUAL methodology is beyond Rocket Science and involves inputs from many different supervisors and managers on a daily basis.

    Throughout the Public Transport Industry there continues to be an ongoing battle to devise and market "Rostering and Duty" Planning and Implimentation Software Packages in some crazed effort to cope with an ever changing regulatory framework.

    Both Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus operate systems very recently purchased and yet,not without major issues which still rear their heads.

    Sickness,Holidays,Jury Duty,Military/Garda Reserve,Study Leave,Compassionate leave,Authorized/Unathorized Absence all represent input`s which can and do alter at a moments notice and which can and do result in a bus full of passengers sitting waiting for a driver who may not have been rostered at all.

    Yes it happens,because like any system,it aint PERFECT and depends to a fair degree on co-operation,commonsense and compliance from INDIVIDUAL employees when the system fails.

    The current set of proposals may well be throwing that particular Baby out with the murky Bathwater,but we shall wait and see !

    Sorry Victor route blocking is the system of marking in that allows a driver to be based on one route and its subsidiaries like the 77/77A or the 16/16A etc the 27 but not the 27B as that is a different route.

    So when you are marked in you only work that route that you are marked in on the current proposal would allow the company to include other routes in the same bill. Not very important for a lot of drivers but for some it is for example if a driver was assaulted on a route route blocking allows the driver to get marked in on another route and know that they will not have to operate on the route they were assaulted on unless they choose to.
    If routes are mixed within Bills this obviously would not be possible.

    Bogeys are split shifts work morning peak break for upto 4 hours and then work evening peak the current proposal is to cut their shift pay in half for anyone becoming a bogey driver from now on.
    Bogeys tend to be worked by the more senior drivers.
