First of all, how many different departments does the Garda Siochana have? We have the regular gardai, drug squad... E.R.U... any other ones? Do we have an F.B.I equivalent?

Also, does anybody know where I can find pictures of the ERU or detectives all kitted out with guns? I want to see how "hardcore" our police force is!

Traffic in dublin castle are Regional,
District/Special resource unit is one that is either district or station level and has various remits. only some stations/districts have them, up to super to create one

    Crime Prevention Unit
    Community Policing Unit

Would there be something to be said for possibly amalgamating the Crime Prevention Unit with the Community Policing Unit?

    Eroo,
Community is exactly that. Tea with the grannys whereas CPU are in fact beat Gardai in plain clothes. THey operate in shopping areas for pickpockets, etc. whereas my distruct has cpu hey dont have the special resource unit. Not everywhere has everything.

As well, soc are our version of csi whereas the search units are specially trained members from the station deployed when needed to perform a thorough careful search of a large area such as a field.

But its a lonely and dark place out there! :(

We dont have a specific crime prevention officer (I presume you mean that guy that tells people about personal and premises security? "Get an alarm" type stuff?). We just have Crime Prevention Unit with about 10 lads on it and they do that.

Spot on deadwood! I now know Crime Prevention Officers are not part of a Crime Prevention Unit!:)

But anyways, could CPO's be amalgamated into Community Policing Units?

Don't think it would work very well.
CPO has a fairly large workload to be honest. He/She has responsibility for various aspects of crime prevention, whether it be advice of personal security to people, talks to business people etc etc

Community policing unit have a big enough workload already without having to give out info on crime prevention.

CPO inmost places is of sergeant rank too

There has to be a CPO in every district or atleast division around the country to provide information to people under threat etc,

Theres a crime prevention unit in cork, and there used to be ones in limerick and galway for stopping pickpockets etc in busy areas.
Im sure there's units like this in other stations/districts around the country but just with different titles
