Having been thinking about buying one of these over the weekend.
    http://h40059.www4.hp.com/hp2133/

However it runs on Linux and I am worried about compatibility problems. I want it mainly for downloading music and surfing a bit. Is there anyway I can change the OS from Linux to Windows ? How? Theres no CD drive on it AFAIK. Is it an easy process ? Or one for a specialist ?

Put ubuntu on it, it should run pretty well on it.

How exactly are you downloading music? The likes of iTunes will not run on Linux.

Exactly what compatibility problems are you concerned about?

The other thing to remember is that if this machine is designed for Linux, there may be no Windows drivers available for the hardware.

List some of the programs you use a lot on Windows and we'll tell you good linux equivalents. Also, I would think Windows would run fine on that machine.

The plan would be to download using Torrents and save it in iTunes. The only other programs Id be using with regularity is Explorer and Word.

Regards compatibility- I have a MAc at the moment and it is a regretted purchase as I often come across software downloads that are .exe files. I know there can be ways around this but Im just sick of going searching for them and software not installing. Thats why I want to go back to Windows and so am a bit dodgy about this being Linux ( I know it has its fans but remember Im trying to avoid compatability issues, etc ).

I just want a simple cheap netbook that will surf and download without any grief. Anyway I think uninstalling Linux and installing Windows is a bit beyond my capabilities so I might give this one a miss. Shame though, the reviews for it seem good and at €250 its a steal.

If iTunes is your main concern then you'll be ok with linux. There are programs like thythmbox or amarok that are very good music players. VLC is also available for linux so videos won't be an issue either. When going with linux as a newbie, it's more fear then anything at the beginning but it really is straight forward to use.

I think you should give linux a try for a month or so. If you really hate it after that then go install Windows on it. Like Kinetic^ said, Amarok, will easily replace iTunes. There's loads of torrent clients, (my favorite being uTorrent through wine). You shouldn't feel installing Windows is beyond your capabilities. Google will guide you the whole way, don't worry about it.
