Reason for the events of Rag-week?

Sadly I was in London at the start of the week and missed all the action...so I don't really know what happened but I need answers. So where did it all go wrong for marginalised, insecure Irish youth, and in turn N.U.I.G. Rag Week 2009? What are the reasons for this break down, and events that could only be conjured from Lord of the Flies and only condoned by the SU of what can only be described as Juvenile detention center based in the vacinity of Oranmore?

Who or what is to blame for the events of RAG Week (RIP) '09? 14 votes

Not sure what the hell was happening but it was all a bit mental.!!!!
Kids were falling out the door of the GPO at 3pm absolutely hammered while the place was gearing up for the next 'foam party'
Personally I think the college missed a golden opportunity for research there- study of mammals who survive near death hypothermic events-
It was bloody freezing when I passed the second crowd on their way out of the 2nd foam party at 6 0'clock. Honest to god,I have a sneaking admiration for these kids, how they do it, god only knows!!!!!!!!

Mature student myself in Nuig, was on campus all week with all the other pensioners so didn't see too much but have to say I was shocked to see the young girls throw themselves off the quincentennial bridge!!!! stupid, they were obviously not from Galway. The currents in the Corrib are lethal and have taken many a strong swimmer minus alcohol to their death. I myself saw a person drown there years ago.
The college I believe should do more to publicise the dangers of the River Corrib and the canals to the students :(

Sure that’s been the way since time began, but why did the College pull their support for it? Not that they ever did sweet FA to accommodate anyways, regarding lectures and work. A friend of mine does Bio-Med and his busiest week in college is always Rag Week.

Cheers, I just got me new jam jars from Specsavers. On the plus side I was able to see that this was another thread about rag week, but on the other hand, I now look like Geordi La Forge.

As I said, I wasn't around and really just wanna know did the college blow it out of proportion or was it out of hand. Reading throw old threads just gets the "loosen up" vs. "grow up" debate which is more about perspectives rather than what actually caused the college to pull it.

Root cause in my opinion was nightclubs putting on Foam parties during the day! Really bad idea!
Many people will argue that it can't be blamed on the nightclubs and i would agree if i was nightclub owner i would be opening during the day during rag week to make extra cash but you have to think of it like drugs!
Gardai don't go after the drug addict, they get the problem at the source, they try catch the dealer!
If there were no foam parties students would still drink during the day but they'd have less incentive to go into town and annoy the public! They'd be more inclined to stay in there houses drinkin or go "bushing" around the campus!
In my opinion the two days that there was public outrage was Monday & Tuesday!
