Story with the 100 metre track in Murrayfield ?

Could anybody tell me anything about the 100 metre track down one side of the pitch in Murrayfield?

Don't ask me where my fascination comes from but I really would like to know what the story is with it. Is it ever used for 100 metre racing? Or does that strip of track have some other use and is then just employed as a sprinting track as an afterthought? Why is it there? Is it something to do with Scotland's sprinting tradition?

It seems to me to be a really strange set up for a stadium, and I'm not aware of anything similar in any sport around the world, like I say, I can't explain my fascination but I'd love to know.

There is a green synthetic sprint straight down one side of the ground which is the Scottish national rugby union stadium although it staged rugby league's Challenge Cup Final in 2000. Murrayfield has been used for athletics meetings in the past but it is thought that the oval track used was only ever a temporary grass affair. It was a certainly a grass track in 1968.

    Hope that helps.
