That's good enough for me! Especially since the British media are happy to claim most of our Northern Ireland boys as their own!

Are we that desperate for success; actually, come to think of it, we are.
The soccer crowd have proved this.

I don't care where his man or dad are from, he is English and that's the bottom line.

Sure, isn't everyone Irish when it suits them?:D

    only on St Patricks Day.

Having both parent being Irish is a little different than a Tony Cascarino merchant.

I should have asked him if he would fight for an Irish title

Im sure he would fight for an irish title given the opportunity, cant hurt is career. But yeah regardless of his parents he is english! I know his cousin, not saying that to name drop by the way but the cousin is irish from sligo so he has definate ties to here!

A definite distinction should be made with Cascarino. I agree

Sligobhoy im not saying your wrong as you spoke to him in person, but when i spoke to him he said that his mother was irish and his da was english, possibly the other way round!

maybe he did not know this back then or else his da could be a 2nd generation irish!!

i could be wrong but if i am then Frankie himself was wrong!

Are you calling me a liar Paul? I asked Frankie for the photo and when he heard my accent he asked me where I was from and said his mother was from Tipp - he didnt anything about his ould fella until I said - you've an Irish second name is your Dad Irish? He said "I dont get with my Dad, I dont talk to him - but he's from Kerry or Derry, Kerry I think." - exact words.

have to say i dont agree with this statement at all . i think this is very insulting to any irish man/woman who has moved abroad and had a son/daughter . me own da was born in london and moved to dublin when he was 14 . always brought up to be irish and i no if i moved away and came back with a son of 15/16 and someone told me he wasnt irish i know what id do with them . frankie is as irish as any other irish man born abroad or at home just because he was born in england and has an english accent dosent nessecerally make him english

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,222 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Look, it wasn't meant to be insulting; just a bit of banter and especially since the soccer team have always tried to 'steal' a player or two, much like many
    other countries.

Gavin is English, wants to be English, competed for England, so, leave him
    be.

Steve, what would you do with them if they
said your son wasn't Irish, baring in mind
he was born in England and lived there
    for many years?

I think you are overreacting to be honest

But he chose to represent england all through his amateur boxing career.........he may have irish in him but lets not get carried away here he is English.

By the way, the title of the thread seems to intimate if we should 'claim' him.
I will ask, does Frankie want to be claimed? I think that's the real issue.

Claiming someone who we don't even know wants to be claimed. That seems a bit arrogant IMO

I have heard nothing from Gavin to indicate he would even consider Ireland as his home/country or anything else

If i was going to call you a liar i would just say it straight out, im just telling you that Frankie told me otherwise, and as i already stated, maybe he was not too up on it at the time..Not speaking to his da might explain that.

I never said we should claim him - I just asked the question.

Like I've said Matthew Macklins Ma is from Tipp and his Da is from Roscommon, he fought for England and won an ABA title - we consider him Irish. Frankie's Ma is from Tipp and his Da is from D/Kerry, he fought for England and won an ABA title - should we consider him Irish.

In my mind it comes down to himself - if he wants to be considered Irish (like Macklin does) then I am more than happy to do so.

I didnt want to ask him if he "felt Irish" cos its a bit of a dick of a thing to ask - but I should have asked him if he would fight for an Irish title.

Either way good luck to him!

I know what you mean. And Like I and you have said, he's the person to claim his Irishness. We can't and shouldn't be trying to claim for anyone

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭steve-collins

i suppose at the end of the day its in the eye of the beholder . so if frankie feels irish then so be it . but at the end of the day he is as irish as macklin wheather he likes it or not ! i asked him on facebook a while ago and he told me his da was from derry i said it would be good to see you fight for an irish title in the future but i never asked him would he

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MBC

In my mind it comes down to himself

Exactly............we cant just go and claim him if he doesnt want to be known as irish.........obviously he knows can fight for an irish title.......be great if he did.

And former amateur world champion Gavin, whose parents both hail from Dublin, is just as enthusiastic about a bout on The Emerald Isle.
