Probably a really easy answer, but I can't find it.

When ever I download a document it goes straight into my downloads file without opening. Is there a way to have the document open up automatically once it is downloaded?

Also is there a way to sort out my downloads file. Documents seem to be randomly placed there, I would prefer if they were placed in order of when they were downloaded.

    Thanks.

    Well,you have several options.

Maybe you could save your downloads to Desktop first until you decide what you want to do with them.

You can do this by going into Safari>preferences>General>Save Downloaded files to: and select your location after that.

Yes, provided it's a certain type of file. Safari -> Preferences -> General -> Open "safe" files after downloading (check the box).

If you're viewing the folder using the Finder, and using icon view, go to the View Menu -> Show view options -> Arrange by. Select "Date modified." In list view, go to view options again and make sure the checkbox next to "Date Modified" is clicked. Then click on the "Date Modified" column in the Finder window to sort by date.

Thanks. I've sorted the downloads file but it still won't open up my downloads automatically!

What type of files are you trying to open automatically? AFAIK only certain types can be opened. It's a security feature. Although there's probably a way to override this using the terminal.

The majority are word (.docx) and pdf files. I'm downloading a lot at the moment for work and it's a pain in the head having to select the individual file every time especially when the downloads file isn't top loading.

If you have a copy of the downloads folder in the dock, control-click on it and ensure that it is set to display as a folder, rather than a stack, and also that "Sort by" is set to Date Added, rather than created or modified.

If you do this, the most recent downloads are at the top of the pop-up list, so you just download something (or save it from an email) and then select it from the top of the downloads list in the dock.
