Where does RIAT take place? And how does one go about seeing it? You've been before vulcan I think?

Where does RIAT take place? And how does one go about seeing it? You've been before vulcan I think?

It's held at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

It's takes place 18-19th July, plenty of info on their website

As Gazza22 has mentioned, it is held every year at RAF Fairford. In the Guinness Book of records as the world biggest military air show, well worth going if you ever get a chance. I was there twice and attempted once (last year when it was cancelled), and am going again this year. go once and you're hooked!

Its something I would definitely love to go to. Either this summer or next. (most likely next but no harm to be thinking about it now!).
What are the best tickets to get? ie. Park and view / Granstand / Other. Theres loads to choose from, and lots of price differences !

Now thats a question! Firstly, will you be going for one day or both show days? We usually go do both as it is neigh on impossible to see all the flying display (7-8 hours) and see all the static aircraft and visit the 300 or so stalls and exhibitions over the 2 miles of the base. We do one day in the public grandstand which I would highly recommend doing as it gets you above the throngs and gives you a good view of the display line. The second day we start at one of the air field and just stroll to the other end, stopping for food or to see bits that we may have missed in the flying display or those that were'nt flying the first day. without rushing this can quite easy last a full day. You have to buy an entrance ticket first (unless you go for one of the FRIAT packages) and then the others like grandstand, jubilee garden etc. are extra. If you book early (early bird tickets) you can save £5 or £6 per person per day. Of course, under 16s are free when accompanied buy an adult, but they still have to pay for the extras, like the grandstand. The park and view tickets are for arrivals and departures.

Hope this is of some help, if you need any further info just ask. You would really enjoy it.

Vulcan57, what airport is best to fly into? Bristol, Cardiff or is it easy to get to from London? I'm seriously considering going this year too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 987 ✭✭✭diverdriver

Bristol is handy, it's a short train ride to Swindon where buses are laid on to bring people to the airfield. Plenty of places to stay in Bristol too within walking distance of the train station.

Bristol is nearest and about 40 mins on the train to Swindon, there is a shuttle bus from the air port to Bristol Temple Meads station where you get the train. We always stay in Swindon, but if you are thinking of going and want to stay in Swindon try and get accomadation sorted as soon as poss, nearer the time you will have a job to get even a park bench. Cardiff, by the way, is on the same train line just a little further out. The shuttle buses for the air show leave from Swindon bus station from about 07.00 on the two show days and it takes about 40 mins to get to the air field, it was £5 return, may go up this year though. Go if you get a chance, its really well worth it.

The train from London Paddington to Swindon is about an hour ride.

Thanks for the info. I've just been looking up Swindon, can you recommend somewhere to stay there? Also if we were to stay outside Swindon where would be the next best place?

I was thinking of just staying in Bristol City because i may be only able to go for the one night.

Depends if you want a Hotel or B&B? We stay in a B&B to keep the costs down and after all its only somewhere to sleep. For the last couple of years and this year I have stayed here

    http://www.leftwichmanorguesthouse.co.uk/

Comfortable enough and only a short taxi ride to/from the bus and train stations. Have no experience of hotels but I do know that they up their prices for the air show. Know nothing about accomadation in Bristol I'm afraid

When you say you do both, is that two tickets, One for saturday £30 and one for sunday £30, or does the £40 "Admission ticket for either Saturday or Sunday" do both days. Thanks for the posts so far! :)

You have to buy a Saturday AND Sunday entance ticket to do both days, the ticket for Sat or Sun can be used on either day but not both. It is a little expensive but you get a lot for your money, and its only once a year. You will pay about the same for a west end show in London or a premiership football game and they only last a couple of hours, you can spend anything up to 10 hours at RIAT.

RIAT's right on my doorstep (Swindon) and I go each year (last year was washed out and cancelled sadly). It's a great air show and well worth a visit. Literally, the Dog's Undercarriage.

There are campsites around Fairford and an hotel at the local water park

    http://www.cotswoldwaterparkhotel.co.uk/

Another local airshow worth a visit is Kemble

Nice place, quite pricey though. Do you know if they run a shuttle to Fairford during RIAT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭johnny_doyle

I doubt they do a shuttle. Might need a taxi or hire car (or bicycle if you're feeling fit). Hotels in Swindon likely to be cheaper. The Swindon visitor site has some accommodation info

    http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/swindon/home

The website of FlyBy Camping has a couple of nice maps of the area around Fairford :

Alternative camping site very close to the airfield

Unfortunately finances don't permit me to go this year. Am now aiming to be there next year with a couple of mates.
Will try to get to Duxford in Sept. A mate lives in Cambridge, only 30 min drive. Thats where I got the USAF shots from RAF Mildenhall.

On a similar topis does anyone know anything about the London Flypast for the Queens birthday on June 12th? I can get myself to London for the day and could stroll doen to the Mall to takes shots of the flypast.

Not sure if you will get accomadation in swindon or Fairford area at this stage and if you do you will have to pay through the nose for it. My advice, if you can't get anything closer, is to try maybe Bristol or even Bath and get an early train to Swindon. This is of course if you are relying on public transport, if you are driving then your choice is much wider.

going to this for the first time this year, have accom booked in the flyby camping site right next to it, so it should make for good fun! this was only booked 2 weeks back so might be worth a shot to shoot them off a mail to see if they still have spaces.. they are dividing the camp site into ppl with familys and ones with no familys for the noise aspect I expect :D

if you sign up for the news letter on the Air Tattoo website, apparently they send out mail nearer time to say who's doing what on each day, its what I was told anyways!

The flying displays are pretty much the same both days. Having said that, they sometimes will put some acts on only one day or the other if there are a lot of acts to fit in, or sometimes an act may only be there for one day.

the media in Swindon is now starting to push RIAT (and the Kemble Air Show on June 20th and 21st) and the preparations/work being done to avoid a repeat of last years cancellation. This includes capping the number of tickets being sold and only selling tickets in advance. Big change is that vehicles will now be allowed to park on the base. This interview is from one of the local radio stations :

the Vulcan looked good at Kemble. Looking forward to seeing it again at RIAT. The flying display at Kemble seemed a bit thin and can't help but feel the same about the RIAT lineup. No Raptor on the lineup which is a pity. US military seems very light overall.

the Italian team - something tricolore... MB339's with four underwing stores each - were looking good around RNAS Yeovilton today (wednesday), and there was plenty of Sea King/Commando activity with underslung loads, as well as naval Lynx mooching about...
