    Hi all

Prospective postgrad student at Maynooth next year would like to know whats the story with parking at the college. Is there plenty of it? Is it free? Are there as few spaces as at UCD/DCU!?

    Thanks

The parking is tight at the moment, it's currently free but alot more cars than spaces, and badly parked cars are clamped, but there in the process of a student survey to find out what can be done about this situation to releive the parking... One advantage for poastgrad though, well depending on the course, but the classes may be later in the day than undergrad classes and the spaces could have freed up..

DCU has a three/four storey car park! :) So there are less spaces :(

DCU is much worse off, the multi-story is about all they have.

Maynooth similarly as bad, but without the stupid DCU random selection and yearly levy system. Although you will probably end up paying more with Maynooth clamp-release fees

Depends which campus you're on in my opinion. I'm based on south campus so never have trouble finding a legal space in no more than 2 minutes. Anytime I've had to go to north campus for matches or training the parking seems to be a nightmare!

p.s before anyone says it no I don't drive my car between north and south campus:D

Hahaha I have a friend who actually does that, weird if you ask me!!
    Walk for Allah's sake!!

drive a car too big for clamps and youll be fine, clampers there tried to get me, 18" rims with full profile tyres on my jeep, the clamp was too small and i got to them before they came back with a bigger clamp :D

South campus can be a pain during the day, but I've never not got a space (plenty of room right at the back near the pitches). Nothing near as bad as UCD can get. Always in early if in North Campus so it's never an issue.

    Parking is terrible.

A new car park was built a while ago and it's full up all the time.

From around 10-2 getting parking is a nightmare.

If your talking about the car park beside the astro that has been there since I came to Maynooth in 2006. It was closed for a few weeks last year when they decided tarmac over the gravel.

I always manage to get parking in the carpark beside the pitches nearest to the campus apartments. On Monday I'm in at twelve and it's not a problem.
I've never seen anyone clamped, do they actually do it or is it an empty threat?

I've seen loads of people get clamped, one guy in a lecture I was in got clamped, 100e release fee I think it was.

    Surely is.

They went clamp crazy there a couple of weeks ago, saw lots of people stung. It is a nightmare to find a space on north campus unless you're in early. It's a bit crappy that the university has such poor parking facilities when it's in the middle of nowhere and has such terrible public transport.

    Terrible public transport?

Youve got regular buses and DART services...what do you want? an airfield?

Commuter trains, not darts. Silly country boy. :p

As mentioned above, not a DART service. There's no train that leaves you in for 9am (one will leave you in after 9am and the earlier one leaves you in Maynooth before 8am) which is rubbish for starting work. Both the train and the bus only go from the city centre which is fine if you live in Dublin city but not if you're any way out in the suburbs (it takes me 2hrs via public transport each way, I don't have 4hrs to spare in a day). The one bus service that goes from my area is a private coach which only runs a few times a day, no good considering I never finish college before the last bus home. Plus I'm not sure if it runs during the summer so again, not much use to me. In any case, it takes nearly as long as going into town and getting a bus/train from there.

So in short, yes, terrible public transport. More trains at peak hours (and the inclusion of direct or at least mostly direct trains) and more buses at off peak times are needed.

The fact that you can't get in for 9 on the train is a disgrace really.

Ugh, memories of wandering around Maynooth at 8am on a Monday morning last year... gross!

I don't know why theres not more multi-storey car parks everywhere.
I'm sick of seen green spaces been taken up by car parks. The whole world is a ****ing car park. More multi-storey car parks I say!

You should try getting parking in trinity. I think it's a two year waiting list, for staff!
    They have occasional passes though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Yeah but TCD has far less space available to it and being in the centre of Dublin has a plethora of public transport options from pretty much every population centre surrounding the capital. Not really a comparable situation.

Does anyone know which campus the Postgrad in Education is usually on? Starting in Sept myself and was also wondering about parking. I think classes for us start at 9 so would be in at 8.30-8.45 maybe a bit earlier than the majority so more free spaces?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Not a clue, but either north or south campus, you'll get parking no problem at all at that time.

It's around after 10/11 that parking is a nightmare.

That's great so, thanks Holsten :D
